Give a Little Love’s Flashmob in the Market Square on Sunday 1st December, drew people intrigued by the spontaneous chorus that filled the streets of Frome.
The event was held to raise awareness of the issues of food poverty, and starting the debate in the town about how the community can best support those in need of practical help in the form of food boxes.
The campaign is the idea of local mums Heather and Lyndsey, who want to do more to address the growing need for help and support in a way that encourages and supports local people to support each other.
Fair Frome, a new initiative in the town, is working alongside Give A Little Love and the Warminster and District Food Bank to increase the number of people that can benefit from Food Bank boxes across the town. Fair Frome aims to support people in the community to have the capacity to carry on when things are difficult. It will be working with organisations across the town to address issues of social, economic, health and educational poverty
Fair Frome has some start up funding from a private donor and Frome Town Council, but will be looking for match funding to deliver it’s core aims and objectives.
Mel Usher, leader of Frome Town Council said, “Fair Frome will be a big step forward for the town and plugs an obvious gap.
“Even though Frome can be considered a success story in comparison to other towns, there are still areas of relative deprivation and poverty. Helping to co-ordinate local services and providing others like a dedicated Frome Foodbank will assist many.
“The flashmob on Sunday shows that others think the same and that this topic is slowly becoming more of a priority for the whole town.”
Fair Frome intend to pilot a Frome Community food bank, and are looking to find suitable premises for storage of food and office space within the town. They will also be looking to locate suitable drop off locations for food across the town to support those venues that are already established.
