“All I want is a space to call home – it doesn’t need to be big.” That’s the view of Mark, age 24.
He is one of a growing number of people locally struggling to find any sort of accommodation that they can afford. And it’s an issue that will be discussed at a Fair Housing for Frome public meeting on Monday 20 November when a community-based project which may have an answer will be outlined.
“At all of the Fair Housing for Frome meetings over the last nine months, people have stood up and shared some of their experiences of trying to find suitable housing, for themselves or for their families,” said Alison Barclay from the Fair Housing group.
“Many said they’re now struggling to find any sort of accommodation that they can afford. Even if they do, the biggest worry is often that there’s no security of tenure. This is especially hard if there are young children with nursery places, or older children in school, who face the disruption and uncertainty of frequent moves.
“At the FHfF meeting on Monday 20 November, we’re inviting everyone to come and hear about a community-based project, here in Frome, which may just be the answer if you’re looking for a creative solution to finding somewhere to live.
“This is Frome’s own Tiny Homes project, called the EdSpace, developed through Edventure – a community enterprise scheme.”
Johannes, the founder of Edventure, explained: “We want to make shared living work, by providing a semi-independent micro-home that people can put in their garden as a home for a lodger or family member.
“For the first time ever, on November 20th an EdSpace will be assembled (and taken down again!) inside Rook Lane Chapel. This is a brilliant chance to see one for yourself, and to find out about other Tiny Homes initiatives in the UK and beyond (and to eat cake..)”

The event is on Monday 20th November at Rook Lane Chapel, 6-8pm; all are welcome (refreshments provided!)
