THE farmers’ market, which has been held at the Cheese & Grain in Frome for nearly two decades, has been awarded gold in the Taste of the West farmers’ market awards. It was also shortlisted for the top prize, but was narrowly pipped at the post by St Ives.
Louise Hall, from Somerset Farmers Market said, “This is a huge accolade for the town and a market which has over the years has withstood the ravages of Foot & Mouth disease and major global recession and has seen the public head to cheaper supermarkets in increasing numbers.
“However Frome has proved itself a town which sees the bigger picture, that cheaper imported produce, factory-made food and low-welfare meat is neither desirable, sustainable nor perhaps even possible in a post-Brexit world of uncertainty.
“Being able to buy from the farmer and food producer directly ensures that customers can build up a trusted relationship with local farmers, find out about the issues and even visit the farms at the popular ‘Open Farm Sunday’ events.
“Food producers are obliged to use where possible, ingredients sourced from local farms such as eggs, butter and local flour mills, ensuring that the benefits are maximized to the local economy.
“The market, which takes place on the second Saturday of the month from 9am-1pm, accommodates approximately 30 food producers, mainly award-winning family-run farms and enterprises, with an unbeatable range. Having a cash point and café, and live music at the event, plus parking on tap, ensures that it’s a great shopping experience.
“Come along to the next event on October 13th for the launch of West Country Water Buffalo’s new ice cream range – now that’s what we call headlining news!”
