FROME fire fighter, Robert Gill, has retired after 33 years of service.
Robert joined the crew in 1986 as an on-call fire fighter. Last month crew members at Frome Fire Station gathered for a presentation evening to wish him well and to present him with a certificate of service.
Speaking to Frome Times, Robert said, “I’ve enjoyed my time with the fire service. 33 years is a long time – I’ve pretty much seen it all, done it all, and have the t-shirt! We average close to 500 calls a year – so that’s a fair few call-outs. You never forget the tragedies, and I have experienced more than my fair share. I also remember being called out to a head-on train crash not long after I joined, and also a plane crash in Longleat
“I will miss going out on the fire engine and the team as well. The whole service is about team work – you only gain success by working as a team.”
In his retirement, Robert plans to spend time renovating his cottage.
