LISTEN events are happening at the Black Swan Arts in the coming days, starting with a brand new Soundwalk by Bristol-based Satsymph called “Walking Memories”.
Organisers say, “It is based on material gathered from the last 10 years by Home in Frome. This will launch on the 3rd August in the Round Tower Gallery at 11am.
“Guided walks, showing you how to use the mobile phone app start at 11.15am and 2pm (arrive 15 mins. early) and a Q&A session will take place after each walk.
“Once launched, this walk will be available as long as your phone lasts – many years, we hope. It is indeed a heritage legacy for Frome. ll this is free.
“On 7th August local musician Nick Sorensen will hold two workshops called “Sound and Silence” in the Round Tower Gallery; the first will be from 2.30 – 4 pm and is a family workshop for parents, carers and children (age 5+), £2 per person.
“The second will be from 7pm to 9pm and is for ages 14+ to adult, £5 per person. Booking for both these is essential via www.listensoundart.org.uk.
“Bring your own musical instrument (or object that makes a sound) if you can. A range of shakers, percussion instruments and whistles will be available. No previous musical knowledge or training is required.
“We are delighted to announce that we have managed to secure the international artist, Scanner, with his new commissioned installation, based on a chance find in an auction house. Intrigued? So are we, but we do expect something thoughtful and engaging from this highly creative force. On 10th to the 16th August his installation “Other People’s Stories” will be in the Round Tower Gallery from 10am to 4pm. Free.
“In the Long Gallery at Black Swan Arts the exhibition “Singing the World: A Dawn Chorus” continues until September 1st. This is open from 10am until 4pm Monday to Saturday plus Independent Market days. Free
“Music Wanting to be Played” is installed upstairs in the Round Tower Gallery and is open until the 9th August and then from the 17th August until the 1st September, 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday plus Independent Market days. Free.
“The Listening Hub is downstairs at the Round Tower Gallery, with the same opening times and dates as “Music Wanting to be Played”. Immerse yourself in a library of sound art recordings and films. There will be something different to see and hear every day, with playlists compiled by LISTEN artists and guests.
“Make it a part of your daily routine to pay it a visit. Heard something special? Share it on the Call and Response Wall. There are already loads of responses which are delightful to read. Free.
“Finally, on 13th August at The Silk Mill, Scanner (aka Robin Rimbaud) will be presenting another special event for LISTEN, the UK premiere of “Mass Observation”. The world premiere was held earlier this year in the Centre Pompidou, Paris. Experience an evening of cutting edge electronic music and dazzling visuals, a mesmeric and poetic musical journey through an intimate cinematic sonic world.
“Also on the bill is Joseph Hyde who uses self-built analogue electronics to make warm and timeless electronic music, harking back to the simplicity and idealism of 60s minimalism; 8pm-11pm. £15/£12 concessions. Booking essential at www.listensoundart.org.uk.
