A FUN day at Frome Football Club recently raised around £40,000 to add to a fundraiser for local man, Jamie Mines, who is still recovering in hospital after being electrocuted in December.
More than 2,000 people went along to the ‘Play 4 J’ fun day and tournament on Sunday 19th March. The day included a non-league football tournament won by a Frome side, and an auction of sporting memorabilia, which raised over £22,000.
A race-worn helmet belonging to F1 driver, Jenson Button, fetched a massive £9,000 in the auction. Other successful items included a top signed by a BMX world champion that sold for £1,280 and a steering wheel used by F1 driver Fernando Alonso, which sold for £1,279.
The football tournament running throughout the afternoon saw 12 local teams compete for the Mines Cup; the title was won by the ‘Frome Town Maradonas’.
Organiser Billy Wright said, “The day was sensational! Over 2,000 people came on the day and due to its massive success we are already in talks with Frome Town FC about holding a Mines Cup 2018. Our auction raised a staggering £22,500 and a total of £40,000 is estimated to have been raised from the day alone.
“A huge thanks to all the people that attended, donated and volunteered!
“We have a video of the event being released soon for Jamie to see. He continues to make excellent progress and once again, thanks the town for the support which has given him much determination to recover.”
Jamie is undergoing rehabilitation at a hospital in Oxford, and the money local people have raised – so far over £130,000 – will go towards helping him adapt to life after having both arms and a leg amputated.
