Having spent World Book Day (1st March) enjoying the snow, Vallis First School pupils got an opportunity to celebrate the joy of reading a fortnight later.
Armed with cardboard, feathers and pipe cleaners, mums, dads and carers went in to school for the morning to help their children create fantastic hats to celebrate their favourite books and characters. From the witch’s hat from Room on the Broom to Paddington’s red one (without the marmalade sandwiches inside) and from the Cat in the Hat to Willy Wonka, there was a hat-tastic array of headwear on display!
The children paraded their caps and crowns, helmets and hoods in the playground at playtime, so everyone got to see and enjoy everyone else’s creation.
In the afternoon, parents returned to the school to read stories to the children, both in English and other home languages including Greek, Hungarian, Russian and Turkish. To round it all off, there was a book stall run by the Vallis School Association, which raised valuable funds for the school library.
Headteacher Naomi Pauley said, “Celebrating the joy of books and reading is something we promote here at Vallis First School. Our children were so upset at missing out, due to snow, that we had to find another date to invite our families in to help their children to make our ‘book inspired hats’ and to read their favourite stories.
“It was a fantastically imaginative day and well-received by all our children and their families.”
