FROME Museum’s latest ‘hidden treasures’ exhibition shows off typical examples of 19th and early 20th century accessories worn by some local people when stepping out for the evening.
Jennie O’Kane (volunteer assistant librarian) says, “Our unknown gentleman would have had a wet shave with his choice of razors followed by putting on his dress shirt that has returned from the laundry and which would now need a collar to be attached by special studs and followed by his neck tie which would have been kept in the tie press ready for use. Then he would have chosen a hat and shoes to complete his ensemble.
“Meanwhile, our unknown lady would have been putting the finishing touches to her attire by placing her beautiful silk lace handkerchief into her evening purse, slipping on her dancing shoes and then buttoning her fine kid leather gloves with a glove hook. If it was early evening, she would probably need her lace parasol to keep any sun from her face and then she was ready to meet her gentleman friend.”
Frome Museum is open 10am to 2pm Tuesday to Saturday. Free admission. 1 North Parade, Frome, BA11 3AT.
