From the Wild Bunch: Mice and rats – is it time we changed our perception?

HELLO, this is Jo from the Wild Bunch.

When you are a mouse caught in my home, you get spacious and warm temporary accommodation, a flapjack and a bed made of a sock and toilet paper tube, but I’m aware not all rodents are treated with such kindness.

But shouldn’t they be? After all, they are just wildlife, trying to survive in a world where human activity takes over pretty much everything. In my view, we are the intelligent species, so we should show kindness to anything that lives. But even if you don’t share the same view as me, and the thought of mice or rats near your home fills you with dread, please remember that poison is never the answer.

Bait with poison is not only extremely cruel to the rodent itself, it takes a few days to slowly kill its victim. It’s also very likely to end up higher up the food chain, killing a larger animal that ingests the poisoned rat or mouse. Wildlife rescues regularly see larger mammals and birds that have been affected by rat poison, and trust me, it’s not a pretty sight.

Controlling rat and mouse populations should be left to the professionals, such as the many owls, buzzards and kites we have living around our town. Closer to home, prevention is the key to keeping rodents away. Sweep your kitchen regularly and if possible, keep any food in those cupboards higher up. Your compost and bird feeders are better placed further away from the house. Plug any potential entry holes, such as those housing plumbing outputs, with cotton wool soaked in peppermint oil. Mice hate the smell! They also dislike aluminium foil, so if you need to leave any food out, wrap it in silver foil, which is better for the environment than cling film anyway.

The mouse recently caught in our house was so tiny that its weight didn’t trigger the locking mechanism of the humane trap we set up for it. A diet of nuts, cookies and flapjacks over a couple of nights fixed the problem and we eventually caught it. The little intruder was identified as a wood mouse based on its white belly, darker tail and huge ears, meaning that unlike its cousin, the house mouse, it was less likely to invite his friends and family over. I let it sleep off its big dinner and released it in a woodland location two or so miles away. I made sure there was plenty of shelter and left a little more food as a parting gift. It must have liked its new home, as it never came back.

I think that, as a society, we need to change our perceptions of rats and mice. In the UK, leptospirosis is extremely rare. Public Health England reports that there are around 50 to 80 cases of leptospirosis in England and Wales each year, and even in those cases, rats aren’t always the cause. That is about one case per million people, per year. Other diseases that may be carried by rats are even more rare in the UK, especially in the countryside. Domestic cats are more likely to make you unwell if not wormed regularly, as they carry many parasites that can be transmitted to humans. So why not relax a bit about mice and rats? Keep our homes tidy, wash our hands regularly and it will all be ok.

Our next Wild Bunch gathering will be at The Dippy on Thursday 21st March at 1.30pm. Join Frome Town Council Ranger Asia and I for this session, which coincides with the Frome Kindness Festival. The focus will be kindness to the planet, wellbeing and nature connection. A demo on how to take part in the Community Wildlife Mapping project will be the focus of the second part of the session. There are still plenty of spaces left, so why not join us?

  • Female supergroup raises £30,000 over decade of fundraising shows

A Frome singer has helped raise £30,000 for local charities over a decade as part of an all-female supergroup.

Female of the Species played their farewell show last month, bringing ten years of fundraising gigs to a close.

The group brought together five singers from popular local bands, including Frome’s Claire Perry, Jules Moreton, Charmaigne Andrews, Julia Hanratty and Nicky Davis, backed by local musicians.

The group has spent a decade performing fundraising gigs for charities ranging from the Bath and Wiltshire Air Ambulance to smaller organisations such as Voices, a Bath-based domestic violence charity that has personally supported Claire.

  • Purple Elephant to hold family quiz night

A family quiz night is being held on 10th October in the main hall at Frome College, organised by family support charity, Purple Elephant.

The quiz will run from 5.30pm to 7pm and welcomes teams of up to six people of any age at £10 per team, payable at the door. People are encouraged to register their team ahead of the event. However, walk-ups will, of course, also be warmly welcomed by the organisers too.

Purple Elephant provides holiday activities, pre-school parent support, a youth club, a befriending service and the popular annual Children’s Festival.

Purple Elephant’s Service Manager, Sue Willis, said, “We try to ensure most of what we do is about the family having fun together, so our first fundraising quiz night is no exception. It will start at 5.30pm, so no need for a babysitter as this evening is open to all to come along.”

  • 175 years of the railway in Frome

Frome railway station is marking 175 years of serving the town, having first opened in 1850 under the Wiltshire, Somerset and Weymouth Railway.

The building is Grade II listed and was designed by an assistant of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It is thought to be the last through train shed in the Western Region. A blue plaque on display at the station commemorates this, noting that the timber construction is largely unaltered and describing it as ‘a rare example of a Brunellian through train shed still used for its original purpose.’

The line between Westbury and Frome was officially opened on 7th October 1850 and the day was deemed a public holiday, with the opening marked by a special excursion train to Oxford carrying 100 residents, travelling on the train named ‘Wolf’.

  • Watercolour paintings to be sold for charity in memory of late Frome stalwart

Watercolour prints of local doors, painted by late Frome stalwart John Birkett-Smith, are being exhibited and sold in his memory, with proceeds going to Amyloidosis UK, the charity supporting research into the rare disease which he died from in July.

The exhibition at Rook Lane Chapel on 11th and 12th October, will showcase John’s paintings. He lived in Frome for over 35 years and was a prominent member of the community: he served as mayor from 1994 to 1995, was a Liberal Democrat town councillor, active in the local history society, led Frome Town Walks, was a trustee of the Cheese and Grain, and a passionate supporter of Frome Festival.

John lived with amyloidosis for over 10 years, a rare condition where a protein called amyloid builds up in your body.

  • Teen Frome swimmer sets sights on Swedish national team

A Frome swimmer is making waves internationally as he sets his sights on joining the Swedish national team and competing alongside some of the world’s best swimmers.

Hugo Jones, 18, who trains with Team Bath Academy Swimming, will fly to Sweden this weekend to compete in a major swim meet against top-level swimmers. Later this month, he will join a week-long training camp with the Swedish national and elite teams.

This follows Hugo’s first overseas competition in Stockholm earlier this year, where he competed against elite swimmers from across Europe. He is now aiming to represent Sweden at under-20/23 level and with an ultimate goal of gaining a place on the senior squad. Hugo’s mother is a Swedish citizen and he has dual nationality so that qualifies him to represent Sweden.

Hugo said, “Over the last few years my progress has been on an incline, with me competing at English and British championships and improving my times. This year I’ve been given the opportunity to train with the Swedish national and elite team, which is a fantastic opportunity. I’ll also be competing a lot more in Sweden.
