Frome 2s 205-9 Warminster 2s 209-6
Frome 2s slipped to a disappointing defeat at Warminster.
After winning the toss and getting first use of a belting wicket, things started well. Despite the early loss of Leonard, the in-form Pinchen (48) and Sanger (29) eased The Showmen into a position of strength with a 74-run stand.
However both fell in quick succession and despite an impressive counter-attack from Unwin (33) the middle order failed to fire as Frome slipped to 147-7. Bracher (26) and Cox fought back well to stage a recovery and some late hitting from Asim (19*) boosted the score beyond the 200 mark – the innings closing on 205-9.
Frome began the second innings well with the ball, Asim keeping things tight and Wheeler accounting for both openers. At 45-2 the match was delicately poised, however the Warminster middle-order batted positively to take control. Bateman (52), Tull (53) and Leeworthy (35) all took advantage of the hard surface to punish the loose balls on offer and gradually take the game away from The Showmen.
With the game seemingly over at 186-3, a final burst from Wheeler (4-41) caused a few jitters in the home dressing room as Warminster slipped to 191-6. However Syclemoor and MacDonald saw them home with no further alarms to complete the job and consign Frome to a 4-wicket defeat.
A frustrating mid-innings stutter contributing to a below-par score proved costly for the Showmen, however the fight on display in the second half trying to drag the game back was good to see. Combined with Winsley’s defeat at Trowbridge ,the top of the Wiltshire Covid Group is now very congested with several sides in with a shout of the title going into the last 2 games.
A good performance next week at home to Trowbridge and Frome could still take the season down to a winner-takes all finale at Winsley on the final day.
Next Fixture: Saturday 19th September, Trowbridge (Home) – 12:00 start
