A young local archer has been crowned a national champion after winning his category at the Junior National Outdoor Championships.
Thomas Stubbington, 11, took first place in the Under 14 boys’ barebow category at the competition, held on Sunday 5th July at Lilleshall, near Telford, the home of GB Archery.
Competing in his first major national event, Thomas shot a personal best score of 855 to secure victory by a margin of 25 points against archers from across the country.
The Junior National Outdoor Championships are considered the highest standard single competition in the UK, with competitors required to shoot 108 arrows over distances of 40, 30 and 20 yards during a seven-hour event.
Thomas began archery three years ago after attending a Cubs session organised by the East Somerset Scout District. He later completed a beginner’s course at Frome Town Archers in Woolverton, where he now trains regularly, and has since represented Somerset in competition.
