Frome RFC welcomed old rivals Yeovil to ‘The Lane’ hoping to get back to winning ways after the narrow loss away to Devizes over a fortnight ago.
Frome were able to put the visitors under early pressure when the kick off did not go 10 metres and from the resultant scrum, Frome were awarded a penalty which they kicked to the corner. From the line out the homeside worked the ball to midfield for Inside Centre Mike Rutt to burst through the defence, but he was adjudged to have been held up for the first chance of the day.
Frome’s front row of George Benstead, Geoff Taylor and Elliott Bowler put the opposition under pressure and this allowed the side to recycle quick ball after multiple phases for second row Connor McPherson to score out wide, the conversion going wide.
The visitors then used the slope to good effect to get back in the game and got on the scoresheet through a penalty after a Frome indiscretion at the breakdown.
Frome continued to press and increased the lead through a Darrell Thompson penalty to lead 8- 3 at half time.
The second half started with Frome’s set piece dominating and a second try came after a period of pressure on the visitors line, with James Howard and Ross Toten carrying strongly, the ball was eventually moved out wide for Thompson to score the try.
Frome extended their lead further when from a Yeovil 5-metre scrum the ball popped out the back and Captain John Benstead pounced on the ball and fed Rob James, who offloaded to Phil Meenan to score.
Yeovil then put pressure on the home side who were a man down and after a deft kick from the fly half, the winger scored a converted try out wide. With time running out, Frome pressed for the bonus point try. Being awarded a penalty the home team kicked to the corner and from the line out, set up a maul for John Benstead to score the try.
