Frome Park Bowling Club began the summer season on Saturday and bowlers are looking forward to another busy summer on the green and are very keen to have a successful time with plenty of optimism.
The first action will take place on Saturday 15th April with a club men’s trial match followed by a Men v Ladies match on the Sunday.
The club fixture secretary, Peter Jennings has put together an extensive fixture card and there are plenty of matches available at all levels. The men have some local friendlies as well as entries in both the County League East 1 and East 2 on Saturdays for their A and B teams respectively, also they play in the mid-week Mid Somerset League, as well as several Cup competitions.
The ladies have some local friendlies arranged and a line up of matches in the Wild League where they have for several years been very strong and challenging for the top spot, they also have several cup competitions to compete in.
Finally the club’s mixed section have friendly matches most weeks throughout the summer and play in the Mixed League on a Friday evening. The club also hold regular club nights and social bowling sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for those members who just enjoy an afternoon playing and relaxing with friends usually with a nice cup of tea thrown in.
Club President Steve West, who is a keen competitive bowler said, “I have seen the club thrive over recent seasons and feel that they are ambitious and it is very important to be successful and do well in league and cup competitions as this would get the club more recognition and attract more people in the town to the club. We are very much a club for all ages and abilities, basically anyone who enjoys playing bowls in a very friendly atmosphere can feel at home at Frome Park.”
The club has grown in numbers over recent years with some very successful recruitment campaigns and this season will be no different. The club is looking forward to their Introduction to Bowls Day starting at 11.30am, at the green in Victoria Park, Frome. This free day is an open invitation to all and is a chance for anyone who wishes to have a go at bowls to come along and find out what the club can offer people in this sport. The club has two qualified coaches and for those who would like to take their interest further, they will be running a four week package of coaching on Saturday mornings after the initial recruitment day. This includes joining the club for the whole season for only £10. The club will provide bowls to use and ask people to wear trainers or flat soled shoes while on the bowling green. If you are interested in coming along or would like to find out more about this event please contact either Club Secretary Ian Buchan on 01373 452069 or Club Coach David Whitehead on 01373 452367.
