Saturday 5th February Frome RFC 19 Oxford Quins RFC 22

THE Frome RFC 1st XV were the only senior side in action at the weekend (Saturday 5th February) when they welcomed Oxford Quins RFC to The Lane in a rearranged fixture.

Frome began the game well with the forwards and backline combining well; however Quins showed their intentions looking to move the ball wide. A penalty at the scrum in the Frome 22 was taken quickly and the visitors found the space to sit down for a converted try.

With the restart not going 10, Oxford regained possession and worked the ball forward, a kick in behind was gathered by full back Darrell Thompson who cleared the ball downfield.

Frome’s forwards worked brilliantly at the lineout with second row Connor McPherson stealing the lineout and second row James Howard and hooker Phil Clarke doing well carrying the ball with urgency. However, a pass from fly half Simon Westlake to centre Ali Frost, wasn’t caught cleanly and Oxford were awarded a scrum.

The Frome pack began to pressure the visitors’ scrum and Flanker Cameron Hastie pounced on the No.8 halting any set piece; moving wide Frome were able to steal the ball, and clear their lines once again gaining some great territory. The Quins lineout was once again stolen by Frome and the home side began to build some pressure.

Oxford’s defence held firm, and were awarded a penalty for holding on, a quick tap again saw them break the line but advantage called back following a knock on.

Frome would regain the ball following a scrum penalty which saw a quick tap and kick from Westlake downfield, some superb defence saw Frome win another penalty when the visiting winger was penalised for not releasing.

The following lineout saw Frome set piece moves work well, with strong carries from captain Alex Mallon, and JJ Gagiano putting through a kick which gained some great distance before going out, the lineout was once again won.

Smart play from scrum half John Benstead saw flanker Will Button punch a hole in the defence before releasing centre Mike Rutt who went close to scoring before being brought down just short.

Another penalty and lineout 10m out, saw Mallon crash over from close range to score, but the referee deemed it to have been held up.

Frome had Quins on the back foot with prop Geoff Taylor and Benstead making a break, and following a high tackle on Rutt, Frome had another penalty and kicked off the corner.

Setting a strong base from the lineout, Frome carried hard and edged closer to the try line, eventually second row James Howard crashed through and reach out to score. The extras were added by Thompson.

The celebrations were cut short with the visitors showing why they sit high in the league table, a quick tap penalty saw them move the ball swiftly through the backline before touching down in the corner.

A strong carry by Quins 13 saw him break through to nearly score, but a great read from winger Henry Bull saw him intercept and regain possession.

The pressure on the home side built when Quns looked to score again, but following a yellow card to Taylor, a quick tap penalty looked certain to have been scored, but some last-ditch defence from Frome held them out to the half time whistle.

From the restart Frome looked to regain the ball and a great tackle by centre Frost saw him win a penalty. Quins continued to threaten and a break saw them get back into the Frome 22, but a great cover tackle by Bull saw Frome awarded a scrum.

Quins showed some dominance in the scrum and stole the ball, but another superb tackle from Bull saw Frome regain the ball, but a small scuffle broke out with the Oxford Quins No.8 being given a red card.

Frome used the man advantage to gain some ground, and with Rutt and Leone Naucukidi making some great breaks, Frome found themselves back in the Oxford 22.

A lovely kick through from Westlake but Quins were offside and was brought back for the infringement.

Frome gained a scrum from 5m out and the home side dominated, pushing back the visitors, which saw captain, Mallon, at the back of the scrum drop down on the ball to score. Thompson adding the extras bringing things level.

Oxford would attack again, breaking into the Frome 22, but a forward pass saw a missed opportunity, but was pulled back for penalty in front of sticks. The Quins fly half opting for the posts and easily slotting the kick to retake the lead.

Frome were caught napping at the restart when, following a penalty for a challenge in the air, Quins took the quick tap and broke the defensive line and were soon crossing the line to score, the conversion was missed.

Frome didn’t let up, and McPherson caught the restart brilliantly and began to build in the opposition 22. Frome were soon awarded a penalty, and quick thinking from scrum half Benstead saw him break through the defence, but was again deemed to have been held up much to the disagreements from the home supporters.

The Quins drop out was kicked straight out and saw Frome awarded with a scrum 5m out.

Frome continued their dominate efforts in the pack and push towards try line but was paused to reset. Prop Taylor then made a break, crashing over, but again the try was deemed to have been held up with some good defensive work from Quins.

Winger Rob Sully soon showed some flare as he broke down his wing, an infringement by Quins saw a follow up from Taylor who this time crashed through to score, unfortunately the wide angle saw the conversion attempt go just wide and the final whistle was blown, with Frome being held just short of a win in a fantastic battle against one of the top teams in the league.

Player of the Match was awarded to winger Henry Bull.

A pop-up fair is coming to Frome this month to celebrate all things cats and literature.

The Big Cat-Lit Fair will be held in the Assembly Rooms on Saturday 31st May, featuring local authors, writing clubs and independent craft and gift vendors.

The fair is being organised by a local woman who hopes to open a cat cafe in the heart of Frome, called Puss In Books.

  • Frome sisters remembered with charity day truck convoy

Two Frome sisters, Maddie and Libby North, who died in a road collision on the A361 in 2023, were honoured and remembered at the recent Wessex Truck Gathering.

Maddie and Libby were killed by a drunk driver on the A361 in July 2023. The family is well known in the truck community, and at the recent Wessex Truck Gathering held at Frome Market, the sisters were honoured in a poignant convoy of trucks along the Frome Bypass.

This year’s gathering saw a turnout of 177 trucks from across the UK, including vehicles from Bolton, Liskeard and Heathrow. The event featured food vendors, trade stalls, a kids’ zone and a performance by The Chosen Few.

For this year’s event, the sisters’ parents, Jason and Verity, chose RoadPeace, the national charity for road traffic victims, as the beneficiary.

  • Frome’s Climate Film Festival set to return this month

Films inspired by the climate are set to engage audiences this month as Frome’s International Climate Film Festival returns.

The festival will take place over two dates – 18th and 25th May – showcasing submissions from over 100 countries. The films share powerful stories about climate change and the resourceful solutions being developed by the people most affected.

Organiser Julia Wellard said, “The inspiring stories are told through animation, video, film and music – many of them short, but none lacking in impact. You will find passion, thoughtfulness, humour and resilience, but above all a powerful wish to take positive action.

  • Friends to tackle Jurassic Coast walk for dementia charity

A Frome business owner is preparing to take on a 26-mile walking challenge along the Jurassic Coast to raise funds for Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support Services.

David Wye, owner of Domesticare in Keyford, will be joined by his friend Elaine Keene for the event, which begins in Weymouth on Saturday 17th May. The pair are raising money in support of the charity following the recent dementia diagnosis of a family member.

The charity has been providing dedicated support for people living with dementia for over 30 years.

This year’s challenge follows their successful completion of the Macmillan Cancer Support ‘Mighty Hike’ last year, where they walked 26 miles through the Monmouth Hills.

  • Meet the free social running group bringing residents together – one pastry at a time!

A free running group in Frome is celebrating its first anniversary after a year of helping locals get active, make friends and discover the town – one pastry at a time.

Plod for Pastries, a free, no-pressure running group, was launched last May by two Frome locals Katie Geddes and Ben Wood, who were looking for local clubs to join and meet new people in a fun and active way.

As keen runners, they were already running to cafes for coffee and pastries, and to pubs then decided to extend the invitation to others in the community.

One year on and the group has grown in popularity with an increasing number of people joining to take part in the weekly 3km to 10km runs. The idea is that the group meet for a run then head to further socialise and eat or drink in one of Frome’s restaurants, cafes, bars.

  • Helping plants and wildlife in the climate chaos

Greetings, this is Peter from the Wild Bunch.

This March was the sunniest ever in southern England, with some record-breaking temperatures and long dry spells. Hence, wildfires are occurring in the moors while dry winter bracken and grass have not been replaced with less flammable new shoots. While these fires clearly have a devastating impact on both plants and animals, the underlying climate chaos is much more concerning.

Most plants use two triggers to emerge from dormancy: day length and an accumulation of average temperature or number of days above a certain level. This means that even if there is a long warm spell, a plant won’t emerge unless day length says it’s the ‘right’ time. But extremes of unexpected temperatures can cause a plant to override the daylight trigger and emerge or flower anyway with two painful consequences.

  • Phase two of Frome’s Missing Link’s project officially reopens

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby with further reporting by Frome Times

Phase two of Frome’s Missing Link has officially reopened after being resurfaced, following a successful fundraising campaign.

The 1.3km path, linking the Colliers Way terminus to Elliots Lane in Hapsford, can be accessed from Buckland Road in Great Elm or via the Colliers Way. Originally laid in 2018, its rough surface was unsuitable for horses, bikes, scooters and wheelchairs.

After raising £27,000 last autumn, the route received a £140,000 upgrade, improving access to National Cycle Network route 24. It was formally reopened at a well-attended event on Saturday 26th April, with the mayors of Frome and Radstock in attendance.

The project aims to deliver a multi-user path from Welshmill Lane to the Colliers Way cycle path in Great Elm, creating an unbroken route between Frome and Radstock.

  • Energy entrepreneur to speak in Frome

Renowned energy entrepreneur Howard Johns will be speaking at Frome Town Hall this month giving advice on building a more sustainable future for Frome.

The free talk will run on Tuesday 20th May, from 7pm to 9pm and is ideal for anyone interested in renewable energy and reducing energy bills.

Howard said, “Why are your energy bills so high and what can you do about it? The current energy system is outdated, expensive and harmful to our wallets, our health, the planet and even global stability.

“Every year, we pour thousands into companies that are fuelling the crisis. It’s time to flip the switch.

“Join us to kick-start an energy transformation in Frome: where our homes generate, store and share clean energy. Lower bills, less pollution, real local power.”

  • Licence granted for new Frome nightspot despite local objections

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

A new Frome nightspot can play live music and sell alcohol to its patrons despite concerns raised by neighbouring residents.

Earthaus Property Ltd secured permission in May 2024 to turn four existing flats at 1 Saxonvale into an eight-bedroom hotel, which would overlook the Saxonvale regeneration site in the town centre.

The Saxonvale Ltd has sought to open the ground floor and courtyard area as a café, bar and late night events venue, which could include playing live music and selling pizzas to local customers.

Despite objections from local residents, Somerset Council has agreed to grant the Frome business a licence, meaning it could be up and running within the next few months.
