SODA (Society For Disabled Artists) Frome, has been marking a special milestone.
The group reports, “Forty years ago in Ickenham, Middlesex, a gentleman named Sydney Nightingale, being disabled, had felt rejected when he tried to join ordinary art societies.
“He sensibly decided to form his own group where disabled people could draw and paint in an accepting environment. In 1979, the Society For Disabled Artists became a registered charity and now has branches as far afield as Norfolk, County Durham, Middlesex and Somerset.
“Although Frome SODA is a mere 21 years young, we could not let this anniversary pass by without marking it in some special way. So in our annual exhibition during the Frome Festival in July we are holding a People’s Choice competition.
“SODA has been part of the iconic Frome Festival ever since its tentative beginnings in 2001 and has its own exhibition in St John’s Church for the full 10 days.
“Come and join us for a chance to win your favourite painting by casting you vote in “The People’s Choice.” At the same time, as you view the art work displayed, you might like to buy some greetings cards by the featured artists, local notelets, bookmarks or even commit to purchasing a painting. You’re sure also to enjoy wandering round our beautiful church with its special Festival flower displays. The exhibition will take place at St John’s Church, Church Steps, Bath Street, Frome on Friday 5th – Sunday 14th July from 10am – 4pm; Sundays 11am – 4pm. Free entry.
