TWO Frome brothers who died within a month of one another in World War Onewere remembered this week.
Debbie Christmas, whose father lives in Frome, wrote to the Frome Times to tell the extraordinary story of her two great-great-uncles.
Debbie said, “Henry Munn Stillman was born in 1888 and was in the Somerset Light Infantry at the start of the war.
“He was killed in Belgium on 22nd October 1914 but has no known grave. However, I recently visited the Ploegsteert Memorial to the Missing in Belgium, where he is commemorated. His older brother William Stillman, born in 1884, was in the Royal Marines when the war broke out.
“William was killed just a month after his brother on November 26th 1914, when his ship HMS Bulwark exploded by accident whilst moored in the River Medway near Sheerness. There were only 12 survivors of a crew of 750.
“William is commemorated on the Naval Memorial at Portsmouth, and I believe one or both are mentioned on a plaque in the Frome Memorial Hall.”
Monday 4th August 2014 marked 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War, and commemorations will take place worldwide over the next four years.
