CAFES throughout Frome showed their support for International Women’s Day, with a series of special offers designed to celebrate the day and highlight the gender pay gap.
This coincided with the ‘Stand Together’ event which took place on Thursday 8th March at the Boyles Cross at 4pm. Frome residents were asked to stand together through the town as a symbol of the town’s inclusivity. This visual way of celebrating International Women’s Day, by standing together at the centre of the town, was made to help progress the rights of women through a show of solidarity.
The Black Swan Café first put forward the idea of wanting to contribute to the event by offering a 10% reduction to all attendees at the Stand Together event in the spirit of collaboration.
Euan from Moo and Two said he was ‘delighted to be involved’ and enthusiastically offered all drinks at £2 all day to celebrate International Women’s Day.
Sagebury Cheese was also on board, offering 10% reduction to all event attendees around the event on Thursday in recognition of the gender pay.
International Women’s Day was first conceived in 1911 by the Suffragette movement and has been used ever since to highlight inequality.
Amanda Sheridan from the Black Swan said, “The idea was is to highlight the continuing need for more to be done and to motivate friends, colleagues and communities to think, act and be inclusive by joining together to acknowledge the day.”
Changes are afoot not least through campaigns such as #timesup and from April, companies with 250 or more employees must publish their gender pay gap. The gender pay gap currently stands at nearly 18%.
