A cancer clinic helping people in Frome and the surrounding area receive treatment closer to home has won an award for its work.
The Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) Centre at Frome Medical Practice received the Working with Our Community Award at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) annual staff awards.
The clinic opened earlier this year and has already treated more than 200 patients. It allows suitable patients to continue their cancer treatment locally after receiving their initial care at the RUH’s Dyson Cancer Centre in Bath.
The treatment involves drugs used to treat or control cancer, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal therapy and targeted therapy.
Mel Burcombe, RUH matron for haematology and oncology, said, “I’m incredibly proud of the team for winning the ‘Working with Our Community’ award at the annual RUH staff award ceremony. This service has been a real team effort, driven by our shared commitment to providing patients the best possible care, closer to home. The feedback has been fantastic and it’s wonderful to see the service already growing so more people can benefit.
“It’s been a real team effort and shows what can be achieved by working together across organisations. Thank you to all the partners involved, especially Bath Cancer Unit Support Group. Their fundraising support has been instrumental in enabling us to bring this service to Frome.”
The clinic has expanded from two to three days a week since opening. Patients continue to receive care from the RUH’s specialist nursing team.
The Bath Cancer Unit Support Group helped fund the equipment needed to establish the centre, with a grant from the Richard Oatley Foundation also supporting the fundraising.
