Frome Canoe Club held its annual social and presentation night on Saturday 20th January at the clubhouse.
Pam Dixon reports, “It was well attended with over 68 members and their families coming to celebrate the successes of canoeists in the year 2017. Andy Vowell, the Chairman, began the presentations by thanking all the volunteers who have given their time so willingly to provide a sporting activity for Frome and surrounding areas. 2017 had been an exceptional year for the club, with many individual successes and a steady growth in participation and activity.
“It was especially pleasing to see the efforts of so many young people being rewarded. Henry Lines was awarded the very prestigious Bayman Award for his stunning performance in the National Canoe Slalom event at Llandysul. The Youth Cup went to Aicha Masrour and Alfie Symes for significant progress over the year. Jacob Lines was awarded the Langham Farm Trophy for coming first on both days in the canoe slalom event at Rode in June last year. Jacob now trains with the English Talent Squad, an achievement that Frome has never seen before.
“Other trophies were awarded as follows: Lawrence Sanders for overall performance in the adult category; Vicky Bennett and Kath Norton for their outstanding contribution to coaching during the year. Emma Slevin received the Volunteers Cup for her hard work over the year and dedication to the club.
“The President of the club, Graham Warnecke, who was one of the founder members with Bob Hinton in 1976, ended the awards ceremony by thanking the committee. The canoe club continues to thrive in the town and offers something a bit different to adults and young people alike.”
