Frome Carnival is back to its best!

HUNDREDS of people lined the streets of Frome to see the much-loved procession of Frome Carnival return to the town last weekend.

Kipling Carnival Club’s float at this year’s procession.

Mandy Morgan, event/judging coordinator at Frome Carnival said, “It was amazing to get back out there! I’m incredibly proud of what we managed to achieve as we are not as big as other carnivals, but we hold our own. We’re a real community-driven carnival that celebrates Frome.

“Considering that a lot of the clubs that submit entries to the procession haven’t been able to fundraise as easily as before, we still had a great number of entries and I’m so thankful for their support.

“The carnival is all about celebrating the lovely community that we have in Frome and hopefully everyone had a time to remember and raised money for some great causes at the same time. Compared to other larger carnivals such as Bridgwater I think we actually raise more money per person than they do, which shows just how generous the people of Frome are.”

So far, nearly £4,500 has been raised for local causes through QR code donations and physical bucket collections. This has already exceeded the amount raised from the last carnival, held in 2019, with subsequent carnivals cancelled due to the pandemic. The profit will be split between the Frome Community Wardrobe, Fair Frome, Coleford Scouts and Wessex Counselling and Psychotherapy.

There was a children’s procession earlier in the afternoon before being followed by an evening procession where the judging took place.

Mandy Morgan said, “I want to give a special shout-out to the afternoon children’s procession as it was a great success and proved to be really popular – we had the local army cadets and the fire brigade out to help with the collection, so thank you to them. We had a record number of entries in the children’s afternoon procession, so thank you to everyone who took part.

“In the evening procession we had our regulars that always support us like Kipling Carnival Club, Hot Rock Carnival Club, and the Magnum Carnival Club, but we’ve also had some new local entries such as the Merlin Theatre, Young Farmers and Gorgon’s Carnival Club.”

Kipling Carnival Club came in first place after gaining the most points from the judges with their entry, ‘Rusty’s’, followed closely by Hot Rock Carnival Club’s entry, ‘The Rush’.”

Mandy added, “I’d like to thank everyone that showed up and donated to the carnival, the stewards that helped tame the chaos, as well as giving a big thank you to the various clubs that have taken part!

“We also had two fantastic bands in the Dolphin Marching Band and the Bath-based outfit Jamma de Samba to cater for all tastes and they really brought carnival feel to the town. The Dolphin Band very kindly stopped outside The George to play the national anthem to mark our respects to the late Queen and the new King Charles III.

“The atmosphere going down through the town was electric – there’s nothing quite like it. Months of hard work culminates in a special occasion where we try to make people feel good and raise money at the same time.

“We’re a small committee of about 12 of us so we work really hard throughout the year to make this a reality – if this is something that sounds of interest please so get involved. This was the first time we used QR codes to aid donations and it worked a treat – people can still donate now if they wish!”

If you would like to join the Frome Street Carnival committee then visit their contacts page on their website www.fromecarnival.org.uk

The carnival committee will meet soon to de-brief and count all money raised. You can still donate to the carnival procession fund by your smart phone: text either CARNIVAL 1 to 70560 (for a £1 donation) CARNIVALFIVE to 70450 (for a £5 donation), or CARNIVALTEN to 70490 (for a £10 donation).

Frome Street Carnival is a non-for-profit organisation and relies on the generosity of local businesses to help sponsor the event as well as any money donated to them through the processions. You can donate directly to the carnival on their website.

If you’d like to see the full list of floats at the procession as well as the winners, then visit the carnival’s Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/fromecarnival

Annual Duck Race

  • Rainbow Paradiso brings glamour and fun to Frome Festival

Frome is set to sparkle on Tuesday 8th July as Rainbow Paradiso, a dazzling cabaret night, takes over the Cheese and Grain main stage for an evening of music, comedy and colour.

The show, which has already wowed audiences in Bath at Komedia, is on Tuesday 8th July and features professional artists, including local band Sweet Machine and the Frome Show Choir.

Leading the night is international queen of charisma, Kiki Babs, who promises glamour, laughter and a chance for the audience to shine with fun games and a lip sync challenge (yes, there are prizes!). Kiki will be joined by the seriously amusing Professor of Whimsy, Robert Garnham, and LED acrobatic dancer, Ember Elation, bringing visual magic to the evening.

Sweet Machine is a Frome Festival favourite with gigs at the Silk Mill and the Tree House, fresh from the Brighton Fringe Festival. This locally-based band plays original 80s influenced electro-pop, think Pet Shop Boys meets Human League, but are not averse to a bit of Kylie and are known to indulge in the Time Warp!

The Frome Show Choir will join the band to perform Sweet Machine’s new single, the Rainbow Paradiso anthem, and are looking forward to the chance to display their musical magic to a wider audience.

Local DJ Tashphrodisiac ends the night with a chance to boogie.

“It’s going to be bright, loud and fun,” says the organisers. “All are encouraged to enter into the spirit and let their hair down.

  • Local causes hit the jackpot with Frome Community Lottery grants

Frome Community Lottery has awarded around £4,500 to six local organisations at an annual awards evening last month.

The beneficiaries this year were Frome Town Band, Frome Festival, Cultivating Community, Frome Memorial Theatre, Fair Frome and Frome Birth Talk. Representatives from each of these organisations received their cheques from chair Lorna Lewis.

One of the trustees, Richard Aspray, said, “We are proud to be able to support these fantastic local community groups, but we wouldn’t be able to do this without the contributions of our lottery players. The more players we have, the more local causes we can support.”

During the event, each organisation described their role in supporting the local community and talked about what they would be spending their money on.

Frome Community Trust raises money to fund capital projects which develop community facilities in Frome and the local area.

  • Local school supports children’s wellbeing with new initiative

A Frome primary school is embarking on a new initiative to help children understand how their brains work and support emotional wellbeing, following a recent funding boost.

Berkley First School has received funding for two years to implement myHappymind, an NHS-backed programme delivering interactive lessons in which children learn about their brains and emotional wellbeing.

“The aim is to help them process their thoughts and feelings, and each child is provided with a journal to record their reflections from the lessons,” explained headteacher Suzanne Thompson. “We are thrilled to have been awarded funding. The initiative will support the children in developing positive skills and habits to become their very best selves.”

Parents can join in on the journey too, with the myHappymind parent app. Suzanne said, “This app will help parents understand what their child is learning and provide activities they can do together at home.

  • Let’s make Frome more seedy

LAST year we invited Frome gardeners to share their thoughts on their gardening year.

When asked, ‘Do you save seed from any of your plants?’, just under 30% replied that they always saved seed each year. Well, here at the Frome Seed Library, we’re on a mission to encourage more people to save seed, but where to begin?

Thankfully, some of the easiest plants to save seed from also happen to be the tastiest.

These include peas, French beans, lettuce, peppers, chillies and tomatoes. These generally self-pollinate, so there is very little chance of cross-pollination; the seed you will save will be true to the parent plant (this won’t be the case for F1 varieties, so check that the plant you wish to save seed from isn’t F1 – it will say on the original seed packet).

So, if you grew some particularly tasty peas this year, why not leave some pods on the plant to become brown and brittle.

  • Uncover the town’s rich connections to TV and film with guided walking tour

A guided walking tour around Frome, which follows in the footsteps of television luminaries including Reginald Perrin, Poldark and Nessa from Gavin & Stacey, is due to run this month.

Join local historian David Lassman as he uncovers the town’s rich and surprising connections to the world of film and television through a guided walking tour, which takes place on 3rd, 17th and 25th June.

“Frome has played host to a remarkable range of film and television productions over the years, from classic BBC dramas to modern ITV adaptations,” said David, who has himself appeared on television and in film many times.

The 90-minute tour will reveal local landmarks and hidden corners where iconic scenes were filmed, such as Gentle Street, used in Jane Austen’s Sanditon.

David will also share behind-the-scenes stories, reveal the name of a Frome-born Oscar winner, and explore the town’s ‘bizarre’ association with a BBC primetime show.

He said, “Whether you’re a screen buff, a local history lover, or simply looking for a fascinating hour and a half, this guided tour is for you.”

In addition to the Film and TV tour, David will also be leading walks around the Trinity area, which celebrates several anniversaries this year, and taking people on a journey to the darker side of the town in ‘Foul Frome.’

  • Merlin Theatre hosts a packed line-up of summer shows

The Merlin Theatre has a packed line-up of exciting shows and performances this summer inside the venue and outside at the ECOS outdoor amphitheatre.

From Shakespeare to Jane Austen, the theatre has also become the first in the UK to have obtained the rights to stage a community production of Come From Away, a captivating and a heart-warming story of people who found themselves, on the day of 9/11, stranded on the airport runways of Newfoundland. This year’s open-air programme includes one of the country’s most sought-after touring bluegrass and Americana bands, Buffalo Gals, who are based in Frome.

This much-loved act, featuring their Appalachian clogging step-dancer, will be playing a Sunday Social special on the afternoon of 20th July, as part of the theatre’s ‘Made In Frome’ season.

This is followed by Shakespeare, a classic theatre tradition, which will be presented on the afternoon of Saturday 9th August by Folksy Theatre with Twelfth Night, preceded on the evening of Wednesday 6th August by Immersion Theatre’s family-friendly, suitable for children 8+, version of The Tempest.

The award-winning, international touring experts, Illyria Theatre, will be bringing Lizzy and Mr Darcy to the stage in August with Pride and Prejudice, “celebrating Jane Austen’s 250th birthday at her vibrant and often venomous best,” said the Merlin Theatre director Claudia Pepler.

Merlin Theatre Productions has become the first in the UK to have obtained the rights to stage a community production of Come From Away.

Claudia said, “This is the captivating and heart-warming story of people who found themselves, on the day of 9/11, stranded on the airport runways of Newfoundland.

“Telling the stories of strangers thrown together and how a small community rallied and supported to greet, take care of and, ultimately, celebrate the lives of 6,600 people, from 38 planes, this musical has been an international hit and is now giving the talent of Frome a chance to shine from 17th to 19th July.”

  • OpenStoryTellers take centre stage with powerful climate storytelling event

A film revisiting an acclaimed exhibition showcasing a collective of disabled artists’ sensory responses to climate change is due to be shown at Frome Town Hall.

An All Round Hullabaloo was first shown at Black Swan Arts last year and was produced by OpenStoryTellers in partnership with Green & Healthy Frome.

This year, An All Round Hullabaloo Take 2 will be shown on Thursday 10th July. This intimate afternoon of film, art and discussion shines a light on how the climate crisis intersects with disability and how creativity can serve as a catalyst for justice.

A spokesperson for Green & Healthy Frome, Annabel Crooke, said, “The exhibition grew from a months-long collaboration between artists with learning disabilities and professional facilitators, exploring climate themes through storytelling, art installations, textiles, animation and film. The result is a moving and accessible creative response to the question: Does climate change affect us all equally?”

At the heart of the event is a new film about the ‘making of’ An All Round Hullabaloo.

  • Popular Hidden Gardens of Frome returns next month

The popular Hidden Gardens of Frome is due to return next month, with gardeners welcoming the community in to see the ‘wonderful spaces’ they create and care for. Over 50 different gardens will be open for residents to enjoy between 10.30am and 4.30pm on 11th, 12th and 13th July.
“Do look carefully at the opening days, as many of our volunteer gardeners choose to take a day or two out of the weekend to wander around town and enjoy other people’s offerings,” said event organiser Andy Jones.
“We have 17 new gardens – fascinating sites like The Coach House on Willow Vale, or Withywood a bit further out at Berkley – as well as the return of many old favourites from previous years. We’ve had to invest in a new map to cover everything.”
Gardening for wildlife is the theme for this year, with a hedgehog on the cover and a new “bug” icon in the programme to help identify places specialising in helping wildlife thrive in Frome.

“Several gardens have rainwater capture, ponds, nectar-rich planting and wildflower areas to encourage nature’s visitors as well as the human ones,” said Andy. “As you walk around town that weekend, look out for other people carrying their maps and share tips on where the best gardens – and cakes – can be found!”
Programmes are available from Cheese and Grain, Hunting Raven, Victoria Park Café, Ellenbray, Discover Frome, Frome Town Hall and (new this year) Miller’s Homestore, for the event which is part of the Frome Festival.

  • Share your thoughts on Frome’s Climate Adaptation Plan

Residents are invited to view the latest draft Climate Adaptation Plan which outlines ways for Frome to address the climate emergency.
The plan was developed at a recent workshop called Act to Adapt, run by Frome Town Council and Somerset Wildlife Trust and funded by Somerset Rivers Authority. At the Cheese and Grain, over 120 people attended the workshop and discussed the impacts of climate change and how to build community resilience.
“The climate emergency poses many threats to Frome,” said Natalie Barnett of Somerset Wildlife Trust. “Winters are becoming warmer and wetter, increasing flooding risks. Hotter and drier summers are increasing the risk of droughts, heatwaves and wildfires.
“Following our successful community workshop where local residents shared their insights about climate risks and solutions, we’ve developed a draft plan and now we need your feedback.
