Frome Cricket Club gears up for first session

Frome Cricket Club gears up for its first season in the Bristol-Somerset Division in almost a decade when pre-season gets underway indoors on Sunday 15th February. 

The club will train at Warminster Cricket Club’s Indoor Academy for seven weeks before moving outside in early April – weather permitting!

The first session runs from 6.00-8.00pm with subsequent sessions every Sunday for two hours at varying times. Visit www.fromecricketclub.co.uk for full details of dates and times. All players welcome; new and regular, young and old!

  • Frome Birth Talk receives funding boost from marathon challenge Local charity Frome Birth Talk has received a donation of over £2,800 after the founder’s son completed the challenging London Marathon. Tom Wilson ran the 26.2-mile course on Sunday 27th April in aid of the charity founded by his mother, Karen Wilson, in 2017. He raised £2,878, finishing the event in 3:45:27, for Frome Birth Talk, which provides free counselling and support services for pregnant people, new parents, and those who have experienced baby loss. “This year was also a record-breaking year for the London Marathon, which has landed Tom the title of Guinness World Record Holder. He is now officially part of the highest number of people ever to complete a marathon anywhere in the world,” explained counselling coordinator Lucy Hill. Read more here: https://buff.ly/PMZBeCY
  • Guiding volunteers needed to keep 100-year-old tradition alive Frome’s Guide packs are in urgent need of volunteers to ensure a 100-year-old tradition in the town continues for future generations. Girlguiding has been a part of Frome for nearly a century. The 3rd Frome Guides celebrate their 100th anniversary this year, and 4th Frome Guides will reach the milestone next year. Rainbows, the youngest section of Girlguiding, was introduced nationally in 1987. Volunteers are vital to keeping the groups running, helping with activities such as crafts, games, fundraising events and trips for local girls. “Volunteers are required to attend a unit meeting, which could be every week or on a rota during school terms,” explained volunteer Kirstie Jones.   • Local runner overcomes knee condition in London Marathon challenge A local runner who conquered the London Marathon has described the experience as her ‘victory lap’ — eight years after being diagnosed with a painful knee condition. Katie Geddes, a Frome resident and leader of the community running group Plod for Pastries, completed the marathon on Sunday 27th April. Her achievement came eight years after being diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatter disease — a condition that causes pain and swelling below the kneecap. Katie took on the challenge to raise funds for the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), a charity that supported her following two successful knee surgeries. The BOA conducts research into musculoskeletal disorders to improve orthopaedic treatment, restore mobility and help people regain their independence.   • Local women save and relaunch home-education project Two women have stepped in to save and rejuvenate a home education project after parents were sent a notice that it was closing with ‘immediate effect’. Frome residents Jessie and Hannah rescued the Phoenix Project, which has been running for six years at Critchill Manor Estate, offering a self-directed learning space for home-educated children aged 7 to 14. The project had previously been run by dedicated parent volunteers. However, just before Easter, they issued a notice to families announcing its closure due to difficulties covering rent and continuing to run the space.   • Record-breaking Frome Festival set to include over 280 events Frome Festival brochures are now available for this year’s event, which includes a record-breaking 280 events across the town. Headline acts include the Ronnie Scott’s house band, Guy Chambers, Miki Berenyi Trio (formerly of Lush), Tom Moth (harpist with Florence + The Machine), Gary Stringer (Reef), Rokia Koné, Hackney Colliery Band and more. Comedy highlights include Lou Sanders, Andy Zaltzman, the ever-popular Pop-Up Comedy and Amy Webber. The Bob Morris Lecture will be presented by TV historian Professor Kate Williams. Frome Festival manager Sarah Swales said, “There is a varied programme to suit all ages, including some free children’s events funded by Frome Town Council, notably The Elves and the Shoemaker and Bin Rat, plus Teabreak, which is aimed at the whole family."   • Volunteers needed as fun-filled Children’s Festival returns Frome’s popular Children’s Festival is returning this summer to celebrate childhood with dozens of free activities for children and families — and organisers are calling for volunteers to help the day run smoothly. The much-loved festival, organised by local family charity Purple Elephant, will run on Sunday 27th July, kick-starting the school holidays with events inside The Cheese and Grain, in the Market Yard car park, and throughout Welshmill Woods and Welshmill Park. With a focus on accessibility and inclusivity wherever possible, activities will include basketball, boccia, goal practice, archery, dance and theatre performances, nature-based and wildlife sessions, crafts, scrapstore art and graffiti workshops. There will also be glitter tattoos, face-painting, BMX workshops on the ramps, and music sessions in the professional Bert Jansch Recording Studio.   • Cats and literature to be celebrated in pop-up fair this month A pop-up fair is coming to Frome this month to celebrate all things cats and literature. The Big Cat-Lit Fair will be held in the Assembly Rooms on Saturday 31st May, featuring local authors, writing clubs and independent craft and gift vendors. The fair is being organised by a local woman who hopes to open a cat cafe in the heart of Frome, called Puss In Books. Scarlett, who is behind the cafe project, said, “The fair will be a great opportunity for the community to find out more about Puss In Books, while also meeting others who share a love of cats, books and creativity.   • Frome sisters remembered with charity day truck convoy Two Frome sisters, Maddie and Libby North, who died in a road collision on the A361 in 2023, were honoured and remembered at the recent Wessex Truck Gathering. Maddie and Libby were killed by a drunk driver on the A361 in July 2023. The family is well known in the truck community, and at the recent Wessex Truck Gathering held at Frome Market, the sisters were honoured in a poignant convoy of trucks along the Frome Bypass. This year’s gathering saw a turnout of 177 trucks from across the UK, including vehicles from Bolton, Liskeard and Heathrow. The event featured food vendors, trade stalls, a kids’ zone and a performance by The Chosen Few. For this year’s event, the sisters’ parents, Jason and Verity, chose RoadPeace, the national charity for road traffic victims, as the beneficiary. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Frome’s Climate Film Festival set to return this month Films inspired by the climate are set to engage audiences this month as Frome’s International Climate Film Festival returns. The festival will take place over two dates – 18th and 25th May – showcasing submissions from over 100 countries. The films share powerful stories about climate change and the resourceful solutions being developed by the people most affected. Organiser Julia Wellard said, “The inspiring stories are told through animation, video, film and music – many of them short, but none lacking in impact.
