Frome Cricket Club has installed a new kitchen at the club’s premises at the Old Showfield, after being awarded funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.
The new kitchen, which now has a stainless-steel catering unit, a range cooker, a commercial dishwasher and non-slip flooring, will benefit many community groups that use the facilities.
One of the first users of the new kitchen was Fair Frome, which hosted its Food at Five project, offering a warm space and hot nutritious meal for low-income families and homeless people every Wednesday.
“Food at Five is about more than providing community members with a hot meal. It is about creating a space where people can gather, share stories, food and make connections,” said a member of Fair Frome.
On Christmas Day, the Frome Christmas Get-Together will also use the kitchen to provide a free Christmas meal to those who suffer loneliness and social isolation or may not be able to afford to eat. “Everyone receives a warm welcome, conversation, entertainment and a festive meal,” explained the secretary of Frome Cricket Club, Nicki Brook.
The cricket club’s chairman, Mike Cooper, said, “I am really grateful to the National Lottery for this generous grant. The new kitchen will be a massive boost to both the club and all the other groups that use our facilities.”
The club has a busy cricket schedule during the season with three senior teams and one ladies’ team, five youth teams, a successful All Stars and Dynamos section, plus holiday camps.
In addition, the club is a key community facility, hosting some 12 different societies and clubs throughout the week.
The National Lottery Community Fund distributes over £600m a year to communities across the UK, raised by players of The National Lottery.
