Each fortnight Frome Times puts the spotlight on one or more of Frome FM’s local radio presenters, their shows and the people who get them on the air at 96.6fm.
Recently, station volunteers Terry Stewart, Martin Moss and Richard ‘PJ’ broadcast the Frome Town Council-sponsored hustings live from the Frome Town Football Club. An edited version is available on the Frome.fm website.
The same weekend saw five local people join the station membership on completion of the mandatory one-day training course run by training director, Rupert Kirkham, assisted by Martin Moss. The course enables all new members to learn and practise the basics of radio production in the studio and on location. At the end of a day in which they produce, script, record and edit, the trainee teams present and engineer a 10-minute ‘mock’ show. At a recent BBC seminar for Somerset’s community radio stations, of which there are now 10 around the county, the BBC producer running the seminar was surprised at the high level of training offered to new station volunteers at Frome FM and suggested this might be a model for community radio training around the country.
