FROME Town Football Club chairman Jeremy Alderman has described a recent break-in as a “massive blow” for the club after a large sum of money was stolen.
The bulgary happened at approximately 1.30am on Monday 15th September as thieves possibly used a vehicle to break a side door of the Venue & Sports Bar before entering and taking the safe and some cash tills from an inside store cupboard.
Director and chairman Jeremy Alderman said of the news, “Football clubs are finding things so tight and difficult in regards to money and when this sort of thing happens, it’s a massive blow to everybody involved. So many people have worked so hard to get us where we are today and to change around the whole place to move us forward both in terms of facilities and organisation and the news is a bitter blow to everybody involved – not just the monetary loss but also to each member of staff who works here as it’s an invasion of their space.
“From the way the robbery took place, it was evident that they were probably people who have used the club’s facilities previously, so it’s been a tough few days for everybody and everybody has pulled together to get things sorted and we were still open as usual on Monday night.”
The incident is believed to be linked to a similar burglary which took place the previous night at Walcot Rugby Club in Bath. Again, a vehicle was used as it drove over the rugby pitches, forced their way into the clubhouse and stole a safe. They then drove to a wooded area, forced open the safe and stole the money inside. It’s believed they then drove back over the grounds and on to Lansdown Road.
Police are appealing for anyone who may have any information, or who may have seen people in a vehicle near the sports clubs early in the morning, to contact them on 101 quoting crime reference number 95182/14.
