FROME Town Football Club have a chance to create history next week as they take on Taunton Town in the Somerset Premier Cup final.
The final is taking place at Paulton Rovers’ ground on Tuesday 29th April with kick-off at 7.30pm. If the Robins are successful, it will be only the fifth time they have won the cup in the club’s 110-year history.
The Robins face Calor League Division One side Taunton Town in the final, having had an unusual path to this stage. They began their quest for cup glory with a first round trip to Western League Premier Division side Street who they defeated 3-1. In round two they faced Western League Division One side Keynsham Town on a 3G pitch. It was Frome’s first ever competitive fixture on the surface and they won 3-0 after the original fixture was abandoned after Robins’ keeper Scott Armstrong sustained several broken ribs.
Town were then handed a plumb tie against Sky Bet Championship side Yeovil Town in the quarter-finals which the club had hoped would attract a large crowd. However, Yeovil decided to withdraw from the competition before the fixture was played and Frome received a bye to the semi-final where they beat another Western League side, Odd Down, 3-2 after extra-time.
Frome Town last won the title in 2009, when they beat Paulton Rovers 3-1 in the final, in what was also a promotion season from the Western Premier Division.
The other three successes came in 1967 when they beat Yeovil Town, 1969 where they shared the trophy with Yeovil after a 3-3 draw on aggregate and in 1983 where they beat Taunton Town over two legs.
