Frome 1st XI win by 46 runs. Frome 235-7 (45 overs). Weston Super Mare 1st XI 189 all out (41.5 overs)
FROME beat top of the table Weston Super Mare to replace them at the top of the division after a century from opener Paul Sanger and unbeaten 85 from Sam Croker.
Frome won the toss and decided to bat first on a warm day at the seaside and openers Sanger and Dredge played well early on until Trego bowled Dredge with an outstanding delivery leaving Frome 18-1.
Croker joined Sanger at the crease and the pair played excellently together, regularly finding the gaps and with some great running between the wickets, they put the young Weston side under pressure. Sanger led from the front and brought up his first century of the season in a partnership of 169 with Croker. Eventually Sanger was caught for a superb 109 off 109 balls after being dismissed by captain Davidson.
Sam Croker then took on the lead role as wickets fell regularly around him and ended up with an impressive 85 not out including a two big sixes to finish of the innings. The Weston bowlers fought back well at the end as Frome posted 235-7 from their 45 overs.
In reply Frome searched for early wickets and Croker bowled ex-Somerset keeper Ryan Davies with a superb delivery. Reece Croker lead the attack well as he then picked up Ahmed and then the big scalp of current Nottinghamshire player Peter Trego who was shocked when the bowler bowled an in swinging delivery to bowl him for just 4, leaving the hosts 51-4.
Frome continued to take wickets throughout with the impressive Harman picking up one, captain Mark Sanger claimed three wickets and reduced Weston to 148-9. A combination of poor bowling and good batting meant there was a late 41 run partnership for the home side, gaining valuable points, however Knight was eventually bowled by Watts as Frome claimed an important 46 run victory to go top.
Next week Frome are back at Fromefield in a local derby match as they host Midsomer Norton. The club, whose main sponsor are Hooke Highays, will want to remain top of the league.
