Frome residents have joined the protests in London this week organised by Extinction Rebellion, saying they are frustrated at Government inaction with regard to climate change and ecological breakdown.
The local group says, “The Rebellion started on 7th October, a coach full of people went on the 6th to prepare and a further coach from Frome left on Monday.
“Extinction Rebellion Frome is part of a large international group of concerned people who recognise we are in a global crisis due to climate breakdown and mass extinction of species. The Rebellion is intended to cause disruption in the capital through non violent civil disobedience and is targeted at the Government.
“Extinction Rebellion want the Government to declare climate change a national emergency (and act like it is), reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2025 and set up a national citizens’ assembly, made up of ordinary citizens, to agree on the measures that need to be taken to achieve these aims.
“This protest comes after The Global Climate Strike, led by the inspirational Greta Thunberg on 20th September, when Frome schoolchildren joined the school strike and disrupted Frome town centre.
“If you would like to join the Rebellion on Saturday 12th, there is a further coach going for the day. Various activities are planned including a funeral march for extinct species (wear black, white or pink).
