At a Meeting of Frome Ladies Club held on 27th February, Chairman Christine Cornaby presided and welcomed Paralympic Swimmer Stephanie Millward MBE.
Jenny Boorer reports, “Stephanie, who suffers from MS, was presented with a cheque for £400 on behalf of MS Society Bath and District Group. Stephanie explained that she had started to swim well at the age of four and her dream had always been to be an Olympic swimmer but, sadly, at the age of 17 was diagnosed with MS. Stephanie thought her dream was over as she began to lose her sight but was encouraged by a close friend to continue training and eventually after a lot of hard work and determination, Stephanie realised her dream and became a Paralympian and has 10 medals, including two gold medals. Her sight having mainly returned, Stephanie is currently in training for the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020. The vote of thanks was given by Shirley Smith who said Stephanie’s story was inspirational.
“Hermione Lacey-Goodman, spokesperson and committee member of MS Society Bath and District Group thanked the club for raising the money and gave examples of ways it would be used to benefit their members, all of whom suffered with MS.
“Refreshments were served by hostesses C. Potter, P. Box, J. Phillips and J. Charlesworth.
“The raffle winners were A. Davies, H. Westlake, B. Burridge, R. Wilkin, D. Webster and L. Curtis.
“The next meeting will take place on the 27th March and the speaker will be Ian Williams, who will talk on his travels raising funds for St. Margaret’s Hospice.
