Frome Medical Practice hosts anxiety support session for adult patients

FROME Medical Practice is holding an online anxiety support session for patients.

The session will be hosted by mental health nurse practitioner, Brice, and will take place online on Tuesday 7th December at 6.15pm.

“Anxiety is a feeling of unease or a sense of worry, fear or dread,” said Brice. “These feelings can range from mild to severe. Plenty of people feel anxious from time to time and it usually passes once the situation is over.

“But sometimes these feelings can be overwhelming or magnified in stressful situations and this can affect your daily life. If this is something you experience, then we can help and there is light at the end of the tunnel. We hope this session is something you can join in with.”

The session is designed to support adult patients and provide them with coping strategies and tools to help them manage anxiety. It will help patients understand anxiety, will offer ways to cope with anxious thoughts, as well as strategies for coping with panic. There will also be the chance to discuss feelings at this time of year as we approach Christmas, as well as an opportunity to ask questions anonymously.

“The sessions are open to anyone and you can join in anonymously,” said Brice. “You’ll need to give your name when you register for the event but this won’t be shared during the session and no one else will know you’re taking part. We know sometimes it can be hard to reach out and we hope that making the sessions anonymous means people feel more comfortable joining in.”

If online sessions are new to you, and you have never taken part in something like this before, the practice has dedicated digital champions who can help. They will give you support to ensure you can access the session.

The practice is also able to help if you’d like to join the session but don’t own a laptop or tablet that will enable you to get online. They have a number of devices available to lend to patients who might need them.

To find out more about help to get online or borrowing a device, patients can contact the practice by calling 01373 301301, preferably after 2pm when it is hoped phone lines may be less busy, and asking to speak with a Digital Champion.

To find out more about the sessions or to register to attend the anxiety support session please visit the practice website at fromemedicalpractice.co.uk/anxiety-support-session or call the number above.

  • ‘Flipping good’ fun at the first Frome Pancake Dash

Crowds gathered in the town centre on Saturday 14th February for the inaugural Frome Pancake Dash.

From midday, there were crêpes, coffee and cake around the Boyle Cross, plus a raffle by Frome Skatepark Project, a Valentine-themed photo frame, face painting, crafts and free samples of Bonne Maman jam and chocolate spread.

From 1pm to 3pm, 132 people took part in pancake dash ‘waves’, heading from the Blue Boar up to the Boyle Cross while flipping fabric pancakes created by the Frome Shed in heart-shaped frying pans, watched by around 1,000 spectators.

Mayor of Frome Anita Collier said, “What a wonderful event, even the weather behaved itself."

  • Catherine Hill shop to close after 18 years

A shop that has been a staple on Catherine Hill for the last 18 years is due to close next month.

World Basket, which sells a selection of antique, vintage and contemporary rugs and cushions sourced from around the world, will close on 1st March to spend more time on buying expeditions.

Peter Cox, a partner at World Basket, said, “We’ve really enjoyed trading on the hill for the last 18 years, but have decided we don’t need the six days-a-week commitment in the shop. We will be able to spend more time on buying expeditions, a part of our business we really enjoy. We would like to thank all of the customers who have visited our shop over the years. Our last day will be Sunday 1st March, for the Frome Independent Market.”

World Basket will continue trading on its website, www.worldbasket.co.uk, and at various textile shows in London.

  • Prostate support event to provide advice and community support

A free prostate cancer support event will take place later this month, to bring clinical advice and community support to those who need it.

The event will take place on Saturday 28th February from 11am to 1pm at Thomas Arnold Hall in Warminster School.

Attendees will hear from a range of experts, including Sarah Gray from the national charity Tackle Prostate Cancer. Sarah will speak on the importance of local peer support networks such as Open Door, Warminster, as well as Tackle Prostate Cancer’s national campaign work.

A clinical perspective will be provided by David White and Emma Huckle from the NHS, who will outline the specific medical support services available locally.

Marion Barton, Chair of Open Door Warminster, who has organised the event, will discuss the benefits of joining a local group. She will be joined by current members who will share their personal experiences to help demystify the journey.

Open Door operates a regular prostate support group, every second and fourth Monday of the month from 7pm until 8.30pm at the Warminster Athenaeum.

  • Historian to deliver talk on Victorian estate

Architectural historian Julian Orbach will return to Frome to give a talk to the Frome Society on Wiltshire’s little-known great Victorian estate at Grittleton.

Julian will return on Saturday 21st February, to talk about Grittleton, which spans across the M4 near Castle Combe.

Organisers say, “In 1828, Philip Rundell, silversmith to Queen Victoria, died and left £900,000 to his great nephew, Joseph Neeld. He bought the Grittleton Estate and the manor of Chippenham and devoted his life to rebuilding the house and the villages of Grittleton, Alderton, Leigh Delemere and Sevington, which comprised his estate. Julian will describe the extraordinarily rich high Victorian style of the architecture employed in designing the house, with layers of balconies under coffered ceilings of blue, white and gold, contrasting with the much simpler, but still very generous cottages on the estate, each with a large garden and pigsty."
