A FROME mum has raised £3,000 by walking up Pen Y Fan in South Wales, to fund a refurbishment of the playroom at the Royal United Hospital in Bath (RUH).
On Sunday 3rd September, Hayley Davis along with colleagues from Wessex Lodge School and close friends, walked up the mountain in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, formerly known as Brecon Beacons.
“We did the walk when it was really hot but it was fantastic,” says Hayley, “It took us about an hour and 45 minutes to get up there and an hour and a half down and it was amazing. We celebrated when we got to the top and took lots of pictures; the views were amazing as you could see the valleys.
“The heat was a major challenge of the day and the walk up to it was quite steep. It was doable but still steep, only one of us had done something like this before but the rest of us have not. It was a real highlight to make it to the top.”
Hayley has been raising funds for RUH after her son, Finley-Jack, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukaemia (ALL) in December last year. He is now in remission but still has another two years of treatment to go through.
The fundraising challenge, says Hayley, is her way of giving back to the doctors that have saved lives. She also said the playroom is old and in need of refurbishment. The target was initially set at £1,000 but this was reached within 24 hours through Facebook shares.
“The £3,000 raised has come from local people, there’s no big businesses that have donated, it’s just all from local people.”
Hayley’s fundraising mission doesn’t stop there, as on Sunday 24th September, she is holding a funday at Critchill Manor Estate where there will be 17 stalls including craft stalls and stalls from Frome and Somerset businesses, face painting, activities for children, sweet stalls, an auction and a raffle. Hayley said, “The event is 12pm to 5pm, there’s free parking and it’s free to enter. There will also be a classic car display at the event too!”
