Frome Stars 38-34 Jets
In a tense and at times feisty match, Stars ran out worthy winners against Jets who were Premier league runners-up last year.
Stars started well with shooters Hannah Dredge and Janie Bullus converting early chances. The mid court players maintained a steady rhythm in both attack and defence and Stars were leading at quarter time by 12 goals to 7.
Captain Sophie Cox gave a rousing talk to everyone to keep their concentration, keep doing secondary defence and continue playing our game plan and it worked. Jets shooters were accurate but as usual Kathy Dredge and Lucy Perry got their regular share of tips and interceptions. With good feeding from Sophie and Alice Millard into the circle Stars maintained their lead of 5 goals to be 21 goals to 16 ahead at half time.
Jets changed their defence at half time but this did nothing to halt Stars who kept their composure to lead by 6 at three quarters time. Gambling in the last quarter their coach changed their shooters and this instantly worked in their favour. They scored regularly whilst Stars faltered and at one time Jets were only 2 goals behind.
Fortunately for Stars Hannah was as calm as a cucumber and continued to score consistently cheered on by her watching mum and dad! She took the Players Player award but the Player of the Match went to Lucy for another great defensive display thwarting Jets on many occasions.
All players contributed but the umpiring at times made this match quite disjointed and there were many frustrating errors for Stars to rectify before their next game. Thanks to Tracey Carter for scoring.
Diamonds set off to Devizes for the 3rd match of the season hoping this time to come home with a win against Holt Gold.
Diamonds started the first quarter with determination with some excellent fluidity into the two shooters Georgia and Helen who put up some terrific shots.
Diamonds lost Amy at training in the week to a broken finger so Carly started at GD for this match. Her and Tash worked together to keep the score down and Diamonds finished the quarter 15-10 ahead.
Some excellent centre court play from Georgina and Sheri allowed the shooters some great opportunities to extend Diamonds’ lead to 24 18 at half time.
The third quarter saw Holt really pick to their game. Despite a fantastic effort from Tash, Carly and Elise in defence, Holt edged into the lead 29-28.
Diamonds refused to give up and kept fighting hard and with great defence from Elise in centre court and Carly and Tash continuing to make the shooters work very hard. Some great passes into the circle from Sheri and Georgina allowed the shooters Georgia and Helen to continue their great form and seconds before the final whistle Helen scored the winning goal.
The match ended 36-35 to Diamonds. Player of the match award went to Georgia Cox for her incredible shooting and players’ player went to Elise for a great performance at WD.
