Frome Park Bowls Club held their end of season event, Captain’s Day, on Sunday 28th September.
On a lovely sunny afternoon, which typified this summer on the green, most members can never remember a better season for so many matches played in the dry and mostly sunny days.
Over 30 members joined in with some fun challenges including target bowls, trying to draw your bowl between two cones to touch the well placed jack and trying to bowl into a bucket in the ditch, collecting points for successful bowling.
The winning players were Ros Gregory for the ladies and Colin Henning for the men. The day was finished off with a spider, this was won by Julie Hunt. Over the last couple of weeks a combined Frome team, made up of players from both the Park and Selwood have been playing in the Charity Floodlit Tournament.
After good wins against Norwest, Prattens and Paulton, the team from Frome reached the final on Friday evening against Purnells. Played over five rinks of triples, the Frome team went down to a close defeat, losing on three rinks, drawing on another with one winning rink.
The game came down to the last rink to finish, had Frome held on to the lead they took into the last end then the match would have been tied and there would have been a play off by the drawn rink, but unfortunately their one shot lead was lost by dropping three shots.
The winning triple for Frome was Terry Drew, Richard Phillips and Steve West who played some good bowls to overcome their opponents to secure a 20-10 win. The ladies finished off a good season by ending up in the runners up spot in the Wild league behind Prattens despite losing their last match to local rivals Frome Selwood. Their last two friendlies were both played away from home, firstly at Stothert & Pitt, Bath, where they lost a close game by 50-44. Frome lost two rinks with the other ending in a draw, Olive Maidment, Joan Curtis and Margaret Jennings finishing 15-15.
The second away match was also a trip to Bath to play Bloomfield; on this occasion the Park went home with the win by 44-38, mainly thanks to a superb winning rink of Florence Swift, Julie Hunt and Margaret Jennings, 18-5. The men lost their last friendly by two shots, 80-78 to Sydney Gardens, Bath. With both sides winning on two rinks, the victorious rinks for the Park were, Mike Gulliford, Alan Cottle, Richard Phillips and Colin Henning 20-12 and Nigel Hunt, Lauri Cox, Pete Jennings and Ian Buchan 24-18.
The mixed team won their friendly against Blue Circle by a huge margin of 84-41 with three winning rinks, the best of these was Olive Maidment, Dave Laycock, Julie Hunt and Trevor Elms with an impressive 24-6 victory.
The club recently held their finals weekend, on both the Saturday and the Sunday, the weather was kind and the bowling was very good and for most finals also very competitive. Congratulations go out to all the winning players.
