Frome Park bowlers are having a very up and down time on the green so far this season.
Both the men’s A and B teams have recently had a win and a loss each in the County League East 1. The A team had a great game and beat Stothert & Pitt at home, winning on all rinks to pick up a maximum 12 points, while the B team was well-beaten away against Bath B, unfortunately coming home empty handed.
Then the A team had the difficult task at Imperial on the artificial outdoor carpet green. A very close game with the park men adapting well to the surface, but unfortunately the home side managed to sneak home on two rinks, with the park winning the other to claim 2 points. Frome’s winning rink was Malcolm Jepson, Eddie Maidment, Colin Henning & Mike Gulliford who came from behind to get the win by 19-16. The B team had a much better result at home, winning a close contest by one shot overall 57-56 against Stothert & Pitt, winning on 2 rinks to pick up 10 points.
The men have also had a good win in the Mid-Somerset Midweek League, beating Wyrral Park 59-57. The best winning rink was Chris Bailey-Green, Les Stather, Wayne Pitts & Nigel Hunt who always had control after a good start and went on to win by 21 – 9.
The men played a friendly game away against Yeovil and had a very close tussle, finally going down to a narrow defeat 80 – 77. Frome won on two and drew on another, unfortunately the other rink lost heavily, resulting in the loss overall.
The ladies have had a difficult start to the season, with several experienced bowlers out injured and was finding it hard to pick up any victories even though the performances were improving. A friendly away at Knowle resulted in their first win, a good result by 56 – 36. Di Dowling, Betty Warren & Julie Hunt had the best win by 24 – 10.
The ladies have followed up with their first wins in the Wild League. Firstly they beat Shepton Mallet at home, picking up 10 points with the triple of Betty Warren, Joan Curtis & Val Smith claiming the best victory. This was followed by another good win, away at Street, again picking up 10 points, this time the triple of Val Church, Viv Lake & Olivia Grant claimed the best win.
The club welcomed back former members, Trevor and Lesley Elms, who visited with their new club Stratton Churchway of Swindon for a mixed friendly match. A well contested game ended with Frome Park sneaking the win by 60 – 57. The best rink for Frome was Myra Drew, Frank Russell, Les Stather & Richard Phillips who won 22 – 10.
The mixed team lost to Prattens 50 – 46 in the Mixed MSL, only winning on one rink to get 2 points, this was the rink of Val Smith, Betty Warren, Julie Hunt & Nigel Hunt.
