The Frome & District Probus Club holds regular events for its members and their wives and partners.
The latest one was a tour conducted by the Frome Tunnels Project. Among the interesting sites visited were a set of drafting flues (vestigial remains from Frome’s past wool and dyeing industry), a detailed inspection under the town bridge and a look at the extensive, multi-storied, underground cellars of a pub.
The Frome Tunnels volunteers have built an extensive knowledge of the town’s underground sites and treasures and they are well practiced in delivering fun and informative descriptions of each point where they stop. The tour finished with refreshments / beer and was completed by a slide show picturing other underground sites in the town and Frome Tunnels’ plans for investigating other possible tunnels. Probus members thoroughly enjoyed the tour and are grateful to Frome Tunnels for the event.
The club says, “Probus is an organisation for retired professional and business men and the Frome club was founded in 1984 by Frome Rotary. It meets at the Assembly Rooms every third Wednesday of each month. The monthly members’ meetings consist of club business, coffee and tea, talks on a wide range of different topics, and a two-course lunch. The club also offers a number of other activities, to which spouses and friends are welcome. Activities include walks, cultural and commercial visits, days-out, croquet, barbecue, quiz night, formal lunches with our ladies, etc. The club tries to help members and spouses when it is needed. Currently there is room for a few more members and any man who feels it may be of interest and might like to join, should contact Probus using the contact form on the website: www.fromeprobus .co.uk
