MEMBERS of the Frome & District Probus Club enjoyed a winter tour of Frome this month.
From the club, John Hedges reports, “Our latest event was a winter tour of Frome led by one of our members, Cliff Bawden, who knows Frome’s history well.
“Among the interesting sites visited was a disused woad fermentation shed and a set of drafting flues (vestigial remains from Frome’s past wool and dyeing industry), a look at various historic sites in the town centre, the Blue House, Cheap Street, St. John’s Church, Gentle Street and the Rook Lane Chapel. The tour finished with a lunch at the Castello restaurant in Palmer Street, where a convivial Italian lunch was enjoyed by all. Probus members thoroughly enjoyed the tour and are grateful to the various owners who allowed access to their premises.
“The Frome & District Probus Club is an organisation for retired professional and business men. In Frome it was founded by Frome Rotary in 1984. The club holds regular events for its members during the year to which members bring their wives and partners.
“The club meets at the Assembly Rooms in Christchurch Street West every third Wednesday of each month. The monthly meetings consist of club business, coffee and tea, talks on a wide range of different topics, and a two-course lunch. The club offers a number of activities to which spouses and friends are welcome. Apart from monthly gentle walks, activities include cultural and commercial visits, days-out, croquet, barbecues, quiz night, and formal lunches with our ladies.
“The club tries to help members and spouses when it is needed. Currently there is room for a few more members and any man who feels it may be of interest and might like to join, should contact Probus using the contact form on the website: www.fromeprobus.co.uk.”
