A Frome resident’s walking guidebook has inspired a local man to walk 145 miles and complete a special geocaching challenge hidden within its pages.
John Price’s book, Family Days in the Wylye Valley, features 25 local walks, five of which include details of a hidden geocache. A geocache is a small container hidden near the walk, which can be found using a smartphone.
Local resident Mike Shorey bought the book in May to improve his fitness. Since then, he has completed all 25 walks, uncovering the five geocaches that together revealed the name of a mystery local village. His efforts earned him a £50 prize voucher from the Prince Leopold Inn.
“The book has taken me to places that I have never been to in the past, as it has taken me off the beaten track,” said Mike.
“Having finished the walks I am feeling a little deflated and wondering what to do next. I recommend the book to anybody that is a walker who likes to explore the scenery and history of the wonderful valley.”
The walks range from 2.2 to seven miles and include Ordnance Survey mapping, public transport options, details of nearby pubs and historical background.
