Food that would otherwise go to waste will now be shared with local people thanks to a new partnership between Jay’s Kitchen and Edventure Frome’s Community Fridge.
Each Sunday, surplus food from Indian restaurant Jay’s Kitchen’s popular buffet service will be donated to the Community Fridge, where it will be made freely available to residents.
Community Fridge manager Terri Pitts said, “Food waste is one of the biggest challenges facing our food system. We’re delighted that Jay’s Kitchen has chosen to work with us. Their support means even more good food stays out of bins and reaches people who can enjoy it.”
Jay’s Kitchen, based in Oldford, is open seven days a week and is known for its Sunday buffet.
Jay, from the restaurant, said, “Sometimes we have good food left over. When the Community Fridge got in touch, I thought it was perfect. We cook the food, they give it back to the community. I’m just pleased I can help somebody and I’d love to see more businesses do the same. We’ve got to look out for each other; we’re all human beings.”
The Community Fridge, part of non-profit Edventure Frome, has redistributed thousands of kilograms of surplus food since launching in 2016. The project helps prevent food waste while also helping local residents save money on their food bills.
The Community Fridge is open to everyone. The fridges are based at Loop de Loop in Frome town centre, next to the Market Yard car park and library.
No referral is needed and anyone can take or share food.
