The U15 Girls combination of Frome RFC / Walcot RFC and Bradford on Avon RFC travelled to Wells RFC to take on the hosts who combine with Dings RFC; having met twice earlier in the season the girls knew they were in for a tough game.
Roger Gilson reports, “Using the slope first, the ‘Walcats’ as they are known were out of the blocks quickly putting pressure on their hosts and from a dropped pass in midfield, with everyone else stopping, Nelly showed great awareness to scoop the ball up and run in for the opening score. With their tails up, the Walcats scored again quickly after, with Scrum Half Sophie spotting a hole on the blindside to burrow over from close range.
“The lead was further increased when good interplay by the backs released Captain Ashley, who showed great pace to beat the defence and give the Walcats a 15-0 half time lead. But the ‘Wings’ Girls hadn’t given up and with the use of the slope they scored 2 quick tries to cut the lead to 15-10. The Walcats responded to this with a sustained spell of pressure on the Wings line, with both Summer and Frankie carrying the ball to great effect, this eventually created the space for Full Back Cat to crash over.
“The Wings Girls then started to throw caution to the wind and with some great close passing and support, they levelled up the match with 2 fantastic team tries and with just 5 mins left on the clock and with the Walcat Girls running on empty, they scored the winning try after more good work from the whole team. Both teams must be commended on a great game of rugby which was played in a marvellous spirit.”
