Sat 7th Jan. Regional 2 Tribute Severn. Newent RFC 22 – 12 Frome RFC.
FOLLOWING the Christmas break, and multiple postponed fixtures due to the frozen ground, Frome travelled to Newent looking to start the New Year with an away win.
Frome started brightly and put early pressure on Newent. However, the home team took an early lead when the Newent No.8 broke down the blind side from a scrum feeding the ball to the supporting players, who went on to score an unconverted try (5-0).
Frome hit back with the forward pack carrying hard and from a ruck 20 metres out, flanker Sam Bartlett broke through the middle to level the scores (5-5).
The visitors continued to press but were unable break down the defence until a line out on half way saw captain, Alex Mallon sprint down the touchline who offloaded to replacement Matt Jones who was stopped short just short of the line. Mallon was able to follow up the play to score a try, which was duly converted by Henry Bull.
With time running out on the first half, the home side were awarded a penalty in front the posts which they converted to leave the half time score 8-12
Newent started strongly in the second half with the home fly half using the wind and slope to kick the ball deep into the Frome half. The pressure mounted, and they scored two quick converted tries to lead 22- 12.
The weather then took a turn for the worse and playing into driving rain, Frome found it difficult to make any headway despite some strong running by player of the match Henry Bull.
