AT the quarterly Frome Rotary Club’s Partners Evening held at The Standerwick Conference Centre on Monday 29th July, Rotarians and their partners were given a very interesting talk on Yeomanry.
Retired warrant officer in the British Army Shaun McCormack has been a Yeoman of the Guard since 2001. He has worked for Her Majesty at many Royal and State occasions, including the annual Knight of the Garter Investiture at Windsor Castle, attending State Openings of Parliament, and was a guard at the laying in State of the late Queen Mother.
His talk was very sincere and humorous and he obviously enjoys his new lifestyle as a Yeoman.
Each year on 5th November one of his duties is to inspect the vaults under the Houses of Parliament for Her Majesty’s State Visit, just to make sure no descendant of Guy Fawkes is lurking behind a pillar. Shaun showed his audience some of his uniform which included hat, neck ruffle and his very beautiful uniform in scarlet and gold.
President Elect Jerry Lewis held Shaun’s uniform, which weighed a ton! Jerry is postmaster at Portway Post Office and desperately wanted to hold onto the uniform for his postmaster duties, but alas Shaun would not allow him to keep it!
A thoroughly enjoyable evening was enjoyed by some 40 members and partners, the ‘vote of thanks’ was given by the president of Inner Wheel Kate Lewis.
