Over the weekend of the 16th – 18th May the Rotary Club of Frome visited (as they do every two years) the Rotary Club of Bayeux who they are twinned with.
Their visit this year was particularly poignant for two reasons, firstly to celebrate the Bayeux Club’s 50th year of twinning with Frome and also to be in Bayeux on the eve of 70th Commemoration of the ‘D- Day’ landings in June 1944. Bayeux is a lovely town with its Tapestry and of course the beautiful cathedral where commemorative services were held on Friday 6th June.
Frome Rotarians were given the usual wonderful hospitality by their friends in Bayeux, 50 years ago is a long time past, but a few Rotarians wives from 1964 inaugural were in Bayeux as part of the 50 year’s celebrations; they were June Seward wife of Jack, Eunice Hillman wife of Don and their son Andrew, also the late Arthur Suttons’s son Christopher.
President of Frome Rotary Club Dot Cretney spoke at the gala dinner (in French) and on the Saturday morning Rotarians attended a Ceremony of Memories at the British Cemetery in Bayeux and President Dot laid a wreath on behalf of the club, as did the Bayeux President Chantal Rovarc’h. A marvellous weekend was had by all, and many happy memories shared by both clubs.
