Frome Rotary’s charity concert for Josh

The Rotary Club of Frome is promoting a concert by the Caerphilly Male Voice Choir at Frome Memorial Theatre on Saturday 15th June to raise money for local man, Josh Payne-Gover, who crushed his neck and back in an accident last year.

The Rotary Club says, “The Frome Times has previously covered the story of the unfortunate accident that happened to Josh Payne-Gover.

“Josh is still undergoing physiotherapy at Odstock.  That physio could be done locally if Josh had somewhere to live.  He is well past his discharge date from Odstock, but cannot leave because he currently has no suitable accommodation that can cater for his needs and those of his full-time carer/s.  Efforts are continuing to try and resolve this situation but it is unlikely that anywhere can be provided before December.  For sure, Josh is going to need some funding just to help him stay sane whilst in hospital.

“SIA (Spinal Injuries Association) believe that everyone has a right to live a fulfilled life and that means the life that they choose, a life that has the same opportunities as everyone else. These beliefs have informed the development of their strategic plan.  More information can be found at www.spinal.co.uk   The SIA has been advising and helping Josh where possible.

“The Caerphilly Male Voice Choir (CMVC) leader, Tony Powell, said that they are delighted to be able to do this concert in aid of these two very worthy causes. The Frome Memorial Theatre is also providing services at a very preferential rate.

“The concert will feature a mixed programme and along with popular MVC pieces, some with new arrangements, there will be songs from popular musicals and great song choices from the guest soloist, Cheryl Roberts.  Immediately after the concert, the choir will reassemble in the Frome Assembly Rooms bar where no doubt there will be some impromptu singing.  Patrons are welcome to join them in this afterglow.

“The concert starts at 7.30 pm on Saturday 15th June.  All tickets are £12.50 and are on sale from the Memorial Theatre box office (01373 462795) or online at  www.fmt.website

  • Frome producer tells stories of displaced Ukrainian families in Amazon Prime documentary

Award-winning Frome producer Kayleigh-Paige Rees has released a new documentary on Amazon Prime, shining a light on the lives of displaced Ukrainian families and children.

Narrated by Stephen Fry and produced in collaboration with her company, Raspberry Films, We Are Home offers a raw and human look at the people affected by war in Ukraine.

“The film captures both the devastation and the resilience of those affected and living in Skole, a safer region in Ukraine,” said Kayleigh-Paige, who was named one of Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2022 and won Best Producer in 2023 for her documentary Keep Calm & Carry On, which followed families through the Covid lockdowns.

We Are Home was shot on location in Skole and host communities. “It documents the emotional journeys of those forced to flee their homes, their fight to maintain identity and dignity and the quiet strength that emerges amid chaos,” said Kayleigh-Paige.

  • Frome fundraiser completes 60 half marathons challenge

Local fundraiser Radek Evans has completed a mammoth challenge – running 60 half marathons in a year to raise nearly £2,000 for Frome charities and organisations, often dressed as an elephant.

Radek originally set out in February last year to run 12 half marathons in 12 months, but after completing his 13th half marathon at Frome’s Running Festival last August, he decided to extend his challenge.

His efforts have seen him run 920 miles across Europe, as well as in the UK, raising funds for Frome charities including Fair Frome, family charity Purple Elephant and Frome Carnival.

“My main highlight of the challenge has been being out there, raising money and making people laugh,” says Radek, who dedicates much of his time to supporting Frome charities and volunteering for local groups. “Most of the time I have been running in my elephant costume.”

  • Resident launches Safe Space Frome to highlight gender inclusivity

A local resident has launched an initiative called Safe Space Frome, highlighting businesses and groups in the town that are inclusive of gender diversity.

Ted Prendergast, a trans man, launched the scheme – which has around 20 businesses on board – in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling that legally defines gender based on biological sex.

The ruling has implications for who can access single-sex services and spaces – including changing rooms, toilets, women’s refuges, single-sex hospital wards and any spaces designated for one sex only.

The scheme, which aims to highlight the spaces in Frome that have committed to making trans and other gender-diverse people feel welcome and accepted in their identity despite the court’s ruling, is detailed on the Safe Space Frome Instagram page.

  • Frome Birth Talk receives funding boost from marathon challenge

Local charity Frome Birth Talk has received a donation of over £2,800 after the founder’s son completed the challenging London Marathon.

Tom Wilson ran the 26.2-mile course on Sunday 27th April in aid of the charity founded by his mother, Karen Wilson, in 2017. He raised £2,878, finishing the event in 3:45:27, for Frome Birth Talk, which provides free counselling and support services for pregnant people, new parents, and those who have experienced baby loss.

“This year was also a record-breaking year for the London Marathon, which has landed Tom the title of Guinness World Record Holder. He is now officially part of the highest number of people ever to complete a marathon anywhere in the world,” explained counselling coordinator Lucy Hill.

  • Guiding volunteers needed to keep 100-year-old tradition alive

Frome’s Guide packs are in urgent need of volunteers to ensure a 100-year-old tradition in the town continues for future generations.

Girlguiding has been a part of Frome for nearly a century. The 3rd Frome Guides celebrate their 100th anniversary this year, and 4th Frome Guides will reach the milestone next year. Rainbows, the youngest section of Girlguiding, was introduced nationally in 1987.

Volunteers are vital to keeping the groups running, helping with activities such as crafts, games, fundraising events and trips for local girls.

“Volunteers are required to attend a unit meeting, which could be every week or on a rota during school terms,” explained volunteer Kirstie Jones.

  • Local runner overcomes knee condition in London Marathon challenge

A local runner who conquered the London Marathon has described the experience as her ‘victory lap’ — eight years after being diagnosed with a painful knee condition.

Katie Geddes, a Frome resident and leader of the community running group Plod for Pastries, completed the marathon on Sunday 27th April. Her achievement came eight years after being diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatter disease — a condition that causes pain and swelling below the kneecap.

Katie took on the challenge to raise funds for the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), a charity that supported her following two successful knee surgeries. The BOA conducts research into musculoskeletal disorders to improve orthopaedic treatment, restore mobility and help people regain their independence.
