FROME Running Club recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with a race on 7th May and the club pulled out all the stops to make it a special day.
The club report, “The day began with a huge contingent of Frome Club runners joining the Park Run at the Old Showfield ground. Even the race director (Emma Evans) was a club member as were a good number of marshals (including Rachel Bala, Claire Dunning, Lynn Brand, Justin Worringham and Pete Clardy).
“The sun shone and support throughout the race was extraordinary. Club members were met with Prosecco and croissants after they finished – quite a novel way to end a Park Run!
“One of the three founding members of Frome Running Club, Alan Berry, can normally be found marshalling first post on Park Run, but on this momentous day, he donned his shirt and participated once more in a race. Frome team members cheered Alan on and Harry Ebdon ran the last two laps with Alan and Anne Porter handing Alan his obligatory glass of fizz as he finished.”
Later that evening, the club held a social event in the George Hotel in Frome, which was decked in club-coloured balloons and memorabilia and included a slideshow of photos of races since 1981. This had been deftly organised by Anne Porter, Emma Surridge and Sarah Smallbone. The club then presented its awards and trophies for the season 2021 to 2022.
Besides prizes for running categories, the club made three other notable awards. Justin Worringham was awarded the Chairman’s Award, chosen by outgoing chair, Ellie Burford. Justin was thanked for his ongoing commitment and outstanding contribution to the club.
Anne Porter was voted the winner of the ‘People’s Choice’ award – voted for by Frome Running Club – for her work as membership secretary and for her capacity to be endlessly cheery, enthusiastic and hard working for the club.
The club say, “A special award was made to Pete Clardy in recognition of his work in leading coached sessions on Wednesday evenings and for reviving the Junior section of the club. Pete’s dogged determination has kept the youth sector alive; well done Pete.”
Frome Running Club offers both on and off-road training and welcomes new members, whatever the ability. For more details, visit www.fromerunningclub.co.uk
