The Frome Society’s winter programme of 12 fortnightly Saturday afternoon talks begins on Saturday 5th October, with a talk by Frome’s former MP, the Right Honourable David Heath, entitled “More or Less Idle People: Some of the Men and Women Sent from Frome to Westminster Over Seven Centuries”.
David served as an MP for Somerton and Frome for 18 years between 1997 and 2015. Prior to his election, he practiced as an optician in Frome and was a county councillor for the town, including spells as leader of Somerset County Council and chair of the local police authority. However, he no longer has any active involvement in party politics.
“In David’s talk, we shall meet a few of the more colourful individuals who have represented Frome in Parliament since the 14th century,” said a spokesperson for the society. “What do one of Britain’s greatest naval heroes, a best-selling author with a distaste for party politics, and the only person to have defeated Churchill (in Parliament) during the Second World War, among others, have in common? We will hear their stories and some of their lasting impact on our history.”
Frome Society’s lectures take place in the Assembly Rooms at the rear of Frome Memorial Theatre (BA11 1EB), starting at 2.30pm. Visitors are welcome but are asked to pay an entry fee of £5.
