THERE’S never a dull moment when it comes to entertainment in Frome, with venues all over the town offering a whole host of widely varied events – and 2017 is set to be no exception.
With two theatres, one of Somerset’s leading venues – the Cheese & Grain – and the cinema due to re-open in February, you’ll be spoiled for choice this year. Whether it’s live music, theatre productions, talks, films, fayres or markets, Frome has it all.
The Cheese and Grain boasts an exciting line up for 2017 with big names including Think Floyd, Marc Bolan, T Rex tribute, T Rextasy; and one of the most famous bands in Rock history, Grateful Dead all coming up in January.
Fast forward into February with children’s show, ‘So You Think You Know About Dinosaurs’ with TV presenter Ben Garrod, a special Valentine’s concert from Frome Symphony, Frome resident Huey Morgan of Fun Lovin’ Criminals will be making a welcome return and the popular Frome Tattoo Convention returns.
February also sees the launch of Against the Grain Comedy Club, a brand new monthly comedy night at the Cheese & Grain. The first show on Saturday 4th, welcomes David Arnold and Will Duggan.
Then continuing into the spring, the line up will feature Lee Scratch Perry – A Celebration of Reggae, A Bob Marley Tribute, Bay City Rollers, The Cuban Brothers, Sham 69 and of course the Frome Beer Festival which will take place on Friday/Saturday 17th/18th March. Keep a look out for other names yet to be announced.
The Frome Gin Festival returns in May (tickets are now on sale) and along with the markets and special events, 2017 is set to be another brilliant year.
The Frome Memorial Theatre line up for 2017 has something for everyone. Rock ‘n’ Roll variety production, That’ll Be The Day perform in February (already sold out) along with Frome Rotary Club and The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. There’s comedy from Lee Nelson and a performance by Strictly Come Dancing star Pasha Kovalev in April, as well as a tribute to Elvis.
In May, Frome Musical Theatre Company perform Grease, featuring all the well-known musical numbers from the movie.
The Merlin Theatre also boasts an array of productions, workshops, classes, films and performances.
In January, The Merlin will be screening theatre productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s The Tempest and The Bolshoi Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty. Also, the Bolshoi Ballet’s production of The Golden Age will be screened (this production has been rescheduled from the autumn due to technical difficulties).
On the 24th January, the theatre presents ‘An Audience with England Football Legends Lee Dixon and David Seaman’.
Also coming up, theatre screenings of Swan Lake, Hedda Gabler and Saint Joan.
Frome’s Westway Cinema will officially reopen in February after an extensive refurbishment. No expense has been spared with the renovation, with high quality 6.1 Dolby surround sound systems and full HD projectors installed throughout and all the big films are promised.
