Three Frome College students, have all received prestigious BBC Pride of Somerset Awards.
Abigail Welch, Ben Manning and Steph Smith were presented with their awards at a special ceremony at Bridgwater & Taunton College’s conference centre in Taunton.
“There are only seven awards given each year, so to have three of our students chosen is fantastic,” said Jane Davis from the College.
“Abigail Welch was nominated by her head of year for the way she’s dealt with a really tough time starting her A-Levels; but she didn’t let that stand in her way academically and personally. She’s a spokeswoman for the college, she raises money for charity and she helps out with younger students in their lessons. This award recognises the fantastic young woman she is.
“Ben Manning was awarded this because he managed to deal with some really tough times, in such a positive way. Ben’s father died from a very rare form of cancer in 2014; and Ben now gives young people emotional support as a mentor, helping them find coping strategies to deal with their own tough times.
“Ben is a great role model to other students at the college and has worked tirelessly fundraising and supporting others. He is a valued member of the college student leadership team and has recently done a sky dive to raise money for Dorothy House and Alzheimer’s UK amongst his many triumphs.
“Steph Smith has been a volunteer with British Eventing for more than 10 years; and she stepped into the spotlight recently to lead a team of over 100 fence judges last minute, at Blenheim Palace. Alongside that she also cares for her mum; and also volunteers as a presenter at Radio Frome FM.”
Steph was nominated by Matt Sims, who said “Steff is an absolute credit to her parents, school and teachers”.
Principal Gavin Ball, held a celebratory lunch for the three winners on Wednesday 29th March. He said how proud he was of all three students and they are fantastic ambassadors for all young people and other students at Frome College.
“Our congratulations go to all three winners for such an outstanding achievement, and we wish them all every success for the future!”
