THE presentation evening for the 28th Annual Lions Club of Frome Charity Swim took place at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Hall, on Friday 10th May.
The annual charity swim it is about the effort of many in getting teams of six together to swim, to then gain sponsors, and then to raise much needed funds for worthy causes. This year a total of just over £5,000 has been raised. This gives the massive total in the 28 years of the Lions Swim of £196,106. The money raised was split 50/50 between the swimming teams’ cause and the Frome Lions.
Lions president Chris Bailey Green presented the cheques to the teams who took part. He also presented trophies to a few outstanding teams.
Nugent Vallis Brierly Architects were presented a cup for swimming the most laps, 67 in total, and a cheque for £403.55 which they gave to their cause Wansdyke Play Association. The most lengths swum by a non-swimming club team were the rugby club who swam 62. Their half of the money they raised went to their own club funds.
The most sponsorship raised was Alfie’s Fund who raised a total of £1,027.50. They use the money for Alfie, who is six years old and cannot speak properly, to fund the purchase of an Ipad and a special application to help encourage him to learn to speak.
The most laps swum by a team 11 years and under was Wills Warrior who managed 61 who gave their cheque to Dorothy House.
The Frome Lions cause this year is Dorothy House who give hospice care of patients with life threatening illnesses and gives support to their families. The Lions will be presenting a cheque of about £2,500 when all the money has been received.
The Lions Club congratulates all and every one of the teams for supporting this great event in the spirit of fun and charity.
Lions David Naish and Lion president Chris Bailey Green both acknowledged with gratitude the generosity of the sponsors, Yeoman Asphalt Ltd for covering the costs; the Frome Leisure Centre for the venue and the Frome Medical Practice for providing medical cover; also, Mike Smith for helping with the preparation of St Mary’s Hall and the Lions ladies for providing light refreshments.
