Frome Town snatch victory in derby with injury time winner

Mon 10th Apr. Southern League Division One South. Frome Town 2 Melksham Town 1

AFTER a first-half goal from Joe O’Loughlin put the Robins ahead in the tie, Frome took control of the match and had the better chances including a missed penalty. When the Wiltshire club levelled with minutes to go of normal time, all seemed lost until Jono Davies’ injury-time winner recouped three points and provoked delirium among those in the ground.

Having been starved of games over the winter, the last few weeks of the season have seen a glut of home games, but it was this bank holiday derby with Melksham that stood out on the calendar for many fans and ensured excitement levels would be going up a notch at Badgers Hill.

Frome had shown fight in recent weeks and worked hard for their 0-1 victory at Slimbridge on Good Friday. After struggles in front of goal, the Robins’ attacking play appeared to have found purpose and confidence, the inclusion of James Ollis who returned to the starting line-up alongside Davies bolstering the likelihood of goals.

Frome started where they had left off prior to the weekend. After ten minutes, captain Teale arched the ball to Owen Humphries on the left wing, the revived forward cutting in and powering a low shot over which Mac Boyd did well to clamp his glove. The home side won corner after corner, Davies’ delivery inciting panic amid the yellow-shirted ranks, and it was from such a set-piece that defender Joe O’Loughlin showed his awareness and tidied away the ball into the net.

Though not pretty, the lead had been established and the Robins appeared invigorated for the remainder of the first half, their chests pumped and their tails up. Goalkeeper Boyd, who incidentally played for Frome earlier this season in a Somerset Premier Cup game, was equal to their efforts, quick off his line to block Ollis’ shot when on-on-one and punching away Witcombe’s threatening deliveries. Melksham were grateful for his instinctive save after Conrad Essilfie-Conduah’s charge down the right and the visitors were aided by the post after Jono Davies drifted into the box unmarked and lashed a shot goalwards.

Melksham offered little going forward, Hopper and Hopkins appearing mostly ineffective against the back three of Frome. The clinical quality to Frome’s attack was missing, but the invention on display made for an encouraging half, the only dampeners being that the lead was not more and a suspected injury to Ollis, who ran the ball out from a corner and pulled up clutching his hamstring.

This fixture has been a fiercely-contested one in recent history. Melksham travelled down with the intention of completing the double over Frome after a pulsating 3-2 win at Oakfield Stadium on Boxing Day of this season. That day Jay Malshanskyj’s brace off the bench pipped the wasteful Robins to the post on a chilly afternoon despite their second-half lead through Ollis and Hopper.

One could be assured that the second 45 minutes would not be short on incident. It was a disjointed beginning to the half, Laurent Davis-Wilson replacing Ollis and, gripping his knee, Davies looked likely to be substituted. Both players urged their side forward, working hard to create opportunities. Davis-Wilson, his first appearance for Frome since last year, won a penalty just after the hour mark after being felled by Boyd in a one-on-one situation. Davies ran in to take the spot-kick, but his attempt was to the left and at a comfortable height for the keeper who saved well.

Melksham had their deliverance and it gained them a foothold. With 20 minutes to go, wing-back Jack Carter won a free-kick and caught the defence snoozing, passing to Alex Henshall who barrelled in a shot from the edge of the box but keeper Kyle Phillips at full stretch prevented the ball going in.

As the game drew to a close, the old songs of victory began to be sung in front of the clubhouse but it was too soon. Sam Teale was on the brink of doubling the lead from a corner, but the ball instead spilt to Ralph Graham whose in-field pass for Albert Hopkins cut out the scrambling defence. The forward ran through and despatched his finish past Phillips. It seemed the same old devastating conclusion for Frome who have so often been deprived of a result after sloppy defending in the dying minutes this year.

With just injury time to go, Pollard curved a deep free-kick into the box, one blown off course by the wind, but within reach for Sam Teale who angled his header into the fray. Joe O’Loughlin attempted to meet the ball with a spectacular bicycle kick, one which deflected off a defender into the path of Jono Davies. Redemption in sight, the top-knotted man of the hour hopped in at the back-post and scored in front of a frenzied clubhouse, securing the most feted of wins.

It was the gasp-inducing, ‘I was there’ moment of an up-and-down year, one to rival Alex Hallett’s equaliser against the same opposition last season. As Davies clambered over the fencing to glory in the affection of the BA11 faithful, the Frome fans could be forgiven for thinking that all was right with world. The injuries remain, the late season pile-up of fixtures ensues and falling short of the play-off spots is more or less a given. A spark has been kindled though. Whatever happens against Cinderford and Paulton, Danny Greaves’ side have learnt how to overcome setbacks and blow on the pitch, to pick themselves up and go again and for that the Robins must be lauded.

  • Cheese and Grain could become greenest venue in the West

The Cheese and Grain could become the West Country’s first carbon-neutral live music venue, as the venue seeks to apply for planning permission to create more off-grid electricity on site and install battery storage.

Solar panels were installed at the venue in 2013 by Frome Town Council, which holds the lease for the building. The infrastructure has helped to reduce the venue’s carbon footprint, with an estimated saving of £250,000 on energy bills and £90,000 recovered by Frome Town Council from selling excess electricity back to the grid.

Now, the venue wants to go even further and create the West Country’s first carbon-neutral live music venue.

Director of the Cheese and Grain, Steve Macarthur, said, “It’s a daunting ambition, with some technical challenges but the benefits are huge and it will also help to offset the tens of thousands of car journeys the venue generates each year.

  • Frome hiker raises £6,000 for four charities by trekking 325 miles

A Local man has raised nearly £6,000 for charity by completing four long-distance treks since 2017.

Tom Ayres has walked a total of 325 miles across the four challenges – some solo and others with friends – raising funds for Cancer Research UK, local cancer counselling charity We Hear You, The Sick Children’s Trust and a charity supporting children with diabetes.

“I like the idea of creating a challenge and pushing yourself to the limit, and I also like the endurance side of it where you have to really dig deep,” said Tom. “People can also relate to walking. I enjoy walking anyway, and it’s a nice way to see the local countryside.”

When Tom completed his first trek in 2017, he and some friends hiked along the Two Moors Way – a long-distance trail in Devon – raising money for a juvenile diabetes charity and local cancer counselling charity We Hear You.

  • New survey launched for community organisations and charities

Community groups and social enterprises are invited to take part in a new survey designed to capture the funding needs, challenges and strengths of Frome’s vibrant voluntary and community sector.

The survey, being run by Frome Town Council and Locality UK, is open to a wide range of not-for-profit organisations, including clubs, community groups, charities, social enterprises, arts organisations, community venues and more – of all sizes.

“We know that community organisations and social enterprises are working harder than ever to support local people – often with limited resources. This survey is a chance for us to listen, learn, and explore how future funding and support can best meet the needs of Frome’s voluntary and community sector,” said Johannes Moeller from Locality UK, a national membership network supporting community organisations, who have been commissioned to carry out this anonymous survey.

The sell-out show, which was a headline Frome Festival event, took place on Friday 11th July with support from local indie band Lumley.

All ticket sale proceeds are being donated to People for Packsaddle’s fundraising campaign. The group is urgently trying to raise £10,000 to cover legal costs in their effort to prevent development on Packsaddle Fields, located on the northern edge of Frome.

Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey, who lives in Frome, supports the campaign. The band performed their debut album I Should Coco in full to mark its 30th anniversary, followed by a selection of their well-known songs, including Alright, Caught by the Fuzz, and Mansize Rooster.

  • Roll up! Roll up! Frome Carnival Family Funday this month

The Frome Carnival Family Funday will be held on Saturday 19th July at Victoria Park.

The day will feature all the usual favourites including local stalls from groups and charities, the dog show, bonniest baby competition and the selection of this year’s carnival royalty.

Organiser, Mandy Morgan said, “We are looking forward to holding the event and welcoming the community to join us for all the usual activities and performances from Frome groups.”

New to the fun day this year is the carnival team’s very own ride-on train. “We were previously borrowing the Lions’ train. Harry, our shed manager, had the opportunity to purchase a ride-on lawnmower, and he’s done it up into a train. It looks great.”

With around a £2,000 shortfall this year, the carnival team are keen to raise as much money as possible at this year’s Family Fun Day. “We really need a good fun day,” said Mandy. “The Food Festival has very kindly let us have a stall where we sell cakes, and we usually make some money there too. We are also hoping to hold a few bingo events.”
