Frome Ukulele Club is running their first Frome Ukulele Festival on Saturday 23rd March  – with proceeds going to Fair Frome and Frome’s Missing Link.

The day has two main parts – from 12 noon those who are Ukulele Festival-goers congregate at Rook Lane Chapel for an afternoon of workshops, an Open Mic and a Battle of The Bands.   Tickets for this are only available on line at fromeukulelefestival.org

In the evening, however, the action switches to The Cheese and Grain – and regular supporters of The Mighty Frukes can purchase tickets just for the evening concert – either online or from The River House, or from any member of Frome Ukulele Club.

The evening starts at 6pm and will see the final of Battle of The Bands, then performances from In Sync, bringing beautiful harmonies from Yeovil, and Andy Dan, making the trek all the way from South Wales.   Following next will be Opera-lele, two classically trained opera singers who combine classic songs with classic ukulele – not to be missed.   Finally, The Mighty Frukes conclude the evening with a party set that promises lots of new songs and should end by 10.30 pm.

Tickets for the Festival (including the evening concert) are £16 for an adult (£8 for children) while tickets for the evening concert are just £10 (£5 child) although the Cheese and Grain are also providing “street food” for just £5 (this must be booked in advance.)   Tickets for adults, children and for the food are all available from The River House or online at fromeukulelefestival .org

  • Heraldry talk at Christ Church

A talk on the design and display of armorial bearings will take place at Christ Church.

The talk will be delivered by Stephen Slater, former chair of the City of Bath Heraldry Society and current fellow of the Heraldry Society of England.

It will cover all aspects of heraldry, the discipline relating to the design, display, study and transmission of armorial bearings, and will explore heraldic styles in the UK and across Europe.

Organisers say, “The talk will be informal and traditional. Expect slides rather than AI-generated PowerPoints. Bring your questions and your curiosity.”

The event will run on Saturday 11th April from 10.30am. The talk will start at 11am. There is no charge, but donations are welcome to support a major fundraising drive to provide an accessible entrance to the main west-facing doors.

  • Criminal damage setback at community space

Members of a community space on Vicarage Street say they are ‘disheartened’ by recent criminal damage at the centre.

The police were called to an incident of criminal damage at The Bennett Centre on Vicarage Street at around 11.30pm on Sunday 22nd March.

Windows and paving slabs at the centre were damaged, and two girls, believed to be in their mid-teens and wearing dark jackets and blue jeans, were reportedly seen in the area at the time of the incident.

The Bennett Centre is a popular community space in the heart of Frome. It is currently undergoing a renovation to add much-needed disabled access to the yard and cloister.

  • Frome flea market and craft fair back this weekend

The popular Frome Flea Market & Craft Fair returns this weekend for its sixth year.

Situated at West Woodlands Showground just outside Frome, the event was established in 2021 by Peter and Claire Townsend and is held six times a year on the second Sunday of each month from April to October (excluding September) with the first event of 2026 this Sunday, 12th April.

Regularly welcoming over 250 stalls, the event continues to grow in size and popularity and also boasts a classic/supercar display and live music. This weekend will see the return of the resident due ‘The Sitting Tenants’ and also local singer Kelly Dale.

“There’s a lively mix of stalls both inside and out offering everything from antiques, vintage and retro items to handmade crafts, art and local produce,” said Claire. “There’s a great atmosphere and it’s much more than just a Flea Market & Craft Fair.

“There’s a great display of classic and supercars – all of which gain free entry to the event an

  • Frome stalwarts honoured with Civic Awards

Local volunteers and organisations have been awarded with Mayor’s Civic Awards for their service to the town.

The awards were presented by Mayor Anita Collier at the Annual Town Meeting on Wednesday 1st April at Frome Town Hall.

The award recipients were The Pod Charity, family support charity Purple Elephant, Director of the Merlin Theatre Claudia Pepler, Jane Norris from the Royal British Legion, Ted Prendergast from Safe Space Frome, and Marilyn Burrows from the Widows and Widowers Group.

Before the awards were presented, Cllr Anita Collier gave a presentation sharing highlights from her year as mayor. She said, “I absolutely love what I do. It’s something that makes me very emotional just to think about it, to be honest. I have always been a very strong ambassador for Frome. It’s a fabulous honour and it has been an enormous pleasure for me to see and do so much in this incredible town. We are so lucky here with all the kindness that people show in every respect and all the wonderful work that people do.”

  • Leisure centre operator goes into administration

The charity running Frome Leisure Centre has gone into administration, with Somerset Council looking to appoint a new operator in the next three months.

Fusion Lifestyle went into administration on 1st April. Professional services company S&W Partners LLP (S&W) was appointed as administrator, and will run Fusion on a temporary basis for three months.

Frome MP Anna Sabine, who has been campaigning over ‘persistent issues’ at Frome Leisure Centre, has launched a petition to show support for the facility.

She said, “I am sorry to hear that Fusion has fallen into administration, leaving Frome’s leisure centre facing yet more uncertainty. For years, residents have endured broken boilers, unusable changing rooms, closed courts, gym issues and cancelled sessions, all while still paying memberships. I’ve repeatedly raised these failures with Fusion and Somerset Council.

“I’m relieved that Somerset Council have stepped in to secure the leisure centre until the summer, but long-term planning is crucial to securing the use of these facilities for our town. I hope other provisions will be found quickly.”

  • Archie’s double clinches title!

Monday 6th April
Southern League Premier South Division
Frome Town 3-2 Shaftesbury

Frome Town have been crowned Southern League Premier South Champions after goals from David Duru and two from Archie Ferris clinched a dramatic 3-2 win against Shaftesbury on Easter Monday.

Talisman Duru broke the deadlock inside four minutes with his audacious kick over Ben Taylor’s head between the sticks.

However, the visitors responded in rapid time, with Jack Hoey netting the equaliser just five minutes after; his effort was fired into the top left corner after a throw-in was poorly cleared.

The Rockies, in fact, took the lead just shortly into the second half; after Harris Feltham’s foul inside the box, Santos sent Kyle Phillips the wrong way.

However, it was Frome’s leading goal-scorer who stole the show with Ferris’ brace with just three minutes between each of them, sending Badgers Hill into raptures.

  • Frome Town are champions!

Frome Town sealed the Southern League Division One title on Easter Monday, beating Shaftesbury 3–2 at a packed Badgers Hill in front of 1,096 jubilant fans.

The Robins twice came from behind to clinch a win that caps a remarkable season – from fears last summer that the club might fold, to a record-breaking run that sees them crowned champions with 101 points and three games still to play.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” said Manager Danny Greaves. “It’s been on the cards for a while in everyone else’s eyes but in my eyes it was never done until it was mathematically done.

“To do it in the way we’ve have today sums up our season really. Heart, resilience. We went 2-1 down and to come back and win it in the way we did shows what we’re about.

  • Co-working space opens in Westway Precinct

A new co-working space has opened in the Westway Shopping Centre.

Westway Workspace has been created by Frome resident Diana Miller, who set out to restore a place where freelancers, remote workers and small businesses can work together in the heart of town.

The project has turned what was once an empty and neglected space into a light-filled loft with private studios, coworking desks, meeting rooms and communal areas, all designed to support the town’s growing community of independent professionals.

Diana said, “We wanted to create somewhere where kind and mindful people could come together to work; a space that feels calm, creative and welcoming.”
