Frome’s festival hailed as one of the best in Britain

FROME Festival has been hailed by The Guardian newspaper as one of Britain’s best arts festivals for summer 2021.

The festival, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, is one of 10 picked by the national newspaper  that are set to “brighten up” lives after a year of cancellations, postponements and digital reinventions.

And Frome’s long-running festival is in good company, with Bath Festival and Edinburgh Festival also included in the newspaper’s top picks for summer 2021.

“It’s wonderful for the Frome Festival to be recognised by a national newspaper like The Guardian,” Frome Festival’s creative director, Martin Dimery, told Frome Times. “We didn’t realise they were drawing up such an exclusive shortlist. We have always tried to mix bringing in big names with showcasing local artists and performers. It is a formula that has kept us growing for 20 years.

“We’ve really appreciated all the favourable comments we’ve received since the Frome Times announced that this year’s festival will go ahead.”

About the Frome Festival, The Guardian said, “Quirky cobbled alleyways with streams down the middle, buzzing markets with a carnival atmosphere, indie shops and cafes, four arts venues and a legendary sense of community all mean bohemian Frome is well placed to host a cracking festival.

“The 2021 festival includes comedy from Reginald D Hunter at the Memorial Theatre, music by The Lightning Seeds, and poet John Hegley at the Masonic Hall.

“Outdoor venues include an amphitheatre with nightly shows, gigs in the courtyard of an old silk mill, and a lakeside glamping site at Marston park.

“The festival was due to celebrate its 20th birthday in 2020 and marks the anniversary this year with an exhibition of memorabilia at Rook Lane Arts.

“Several popular annual features are back: garden openings, guided walks, an art trail – and great food.

“Frome’s bars and bakeries serve everything from watermelon margaritas to melt-in-the-mouth blackcurrant cakes made with local organic jersey cream.”

This year’s festival takes place from Friday 2nd July to Sunday 11th July.

Tickets will be available from the hosting theatre or hall. All other tickets will be available from the Cheese and Grain box office.

In the event of further Coronavirus restrictions, some events may be cancelled or will play to reduced capacity, in which case, full refunds will be made from the point of purchase.

  • Local hearing care practice appoints new Clinical Scientist Audiologist

A leading provider of private hearing care locally has announced the appointment of a Clinical Scientist Audiologist who brings with her extensive NHS and private sector experience, as part of the company’s ongoing expansion.

South West Hearing Care, which operates clinics in Westbury, Street and Somerton, welcomed Cathy Cass RHAD MSc to the team earlier this month.

“At a time when many audiology services, particularly NHS clinics, are facing cuts, delays and staffing shortages, we are bucking the national trend by investing in our people, technology and local presence,” said Director and Lead Audiologist Simon Swindells.

“Cathy brings exceptional clinical skills and a compassionate, clear approach that our clients will really value. Her appointment reflects our belief that local, independent hearing care has never been more important. This appointment underlines our commitment to delivering advanced, ethical and personalised hearing care in the community.”

  • Canteen to dish up home-grown potato salad at Victoria Park pop-up

Frome’s pay-what-you-can community restaurant returns this month in Victoria Park, offering affordable and nutritious food for all.

The August Canteen will run on Friday 15th August and is a special collaboration between Victoria Park Community Café, The Community Fridge, Frome Town Council and the Frome Seed Library, run by Kerry Meech.

Kerry has enlisted the help of over 100 Frome residents, who have been growing potatoes to serve up a community potato salad, alongside sausages on the grill, dips and salads, plus a tasty dessert.

Canteen has popped up at Trinity Hall five times over the past 10 months and has received great feedback from diners.

  • New members welcome at Frome’s Knit and Natter group

A knit and Natter group in Frome is welcoming new members to join their various projects or make use of the space to work on their own.

The group meets on Tuesday afternoons from 1.15pm to 3.30pm in the Churchill Room at The Blue House. They work on various projects, including knitting items for local charities such as matinee jackets and blankets for premature babies at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

“We have also helped the Peacock Women’s Institute in Corsham create a cascade of poppies down the tower of the parish church to mark the 80th anniversary of VE day,” said a member of the group Sheila Hedges.

As well as working on group projects, they also work on their own individual crafts. “This includes smocking, embroidery and tapestry,” said Sheila.

During the Frome Festival, the group displayed a ‘the cloak of invisibility’ they made outside The Blue House.

Sheila said, “The cloak was knitted by members using wool dyed with woad, grown in The Blue House garden. The Romans wrote how the Britons appeared out of the mist and the colour variation achievable with woad is thought to be a possible explanation.”

Anyone interested in attending, can drop in to a session on a Tuesday.

  • Local teens organise charity concert in memory of their grandfathers

Two local 17-year-olds are organising a fundraising concert in memory of their grandfathers to raise money for Dementia UK.

Jamie Scorgie and Joe Truckle have organised “Forget Me Not – A Charity Concert for Dementia”, which will take place at the Memorial Theatre in Frome on Saturday 30th August.

“The show will involve many local talented singers and performers and will raise money and awareness of the amazing charity, Dementia UK,” said Joe.

“It’s a charity close to our hearts as both our grandfathers died from dementia and the concert is a way to remember them.”

The concert promises an exciting evening of entertainment with songs from musicals including Guys and Dolls, Hairspray, Waitress and Wicked and well as other popular songs. Many of the performers are friends the pair have met through their involvement with the Frome Musical Theatre Company, its junior section Spellbound, Warminster Athenaeum and other local productions.

  • New drama takes centre stage for Merlin’s 50th celebrations

A powerful new drama following two young strangers on a national service mission is set to be shown at the Merlin Theatre as part of the venue’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

The show, ‘At the Edge’ is the newest work from award-winning Merlin Associate Company Black Hound Productions (BHP).

Organisers say, “As rising floodwaters threaten to engulf their world, two young strangers on a national service mission must navigate their differences and form an unexpected bond, discovering the power of humanity in a time.

“The show is a taut, powerfully emotive two-hander exploring climate collapse, moral responsibility, and the human instinct to connect, even as the world fragments.

“Now in its ninth year of creating award-winning, raw, contemporary theatre from its home in Frome, BHP brings its signature blend of intimacy and intensity to a story that feels urgently close to home.”

  • Rooted in tradition: Local family celebrates 55 years and three generations of growth

Advertising feature

What began on a push bike with gardening tools strapped to the handlebars in 1970 has blossomed into one of the area’s most beloved family-run businesses.

John White, a local with a passion for the outdoors and a strong work ethic, laid the groundwork – quite literally – when he first started cutting turf and sowing seeds over 50 years ago.

From that humble beginning Acres Supply has since grown into a thriving garden and aquatics centre, complete with a dedicated landscaping team and an ever-expanding reputation for quality and service.

By 1997, John had begun to take steps back, handing over the reins to his sons, Rob and Dan. With fresh energy and a shared vision, the brothers expanded the business to include the now well-known garden and aquatics centre, setting the stage for a new chapter while keeping their father’s legacy alive.

  • Safe space fundraiser supports gender diversity

A fundraiser was recently held to raise money and awareness for the safe space movement, which supports gender diversity.

The event took place on Saturday 19th July at Palmer Street Bottle Shop, where people gathered to support the movement focused on creating visible and active trans-inclusive spaces within communities.

Two bands performed on the night – Got Worms and Broccoli Boi – whose frontman, Ted Prendergast, a trans man, recently launched the Safe Space Frome initiative. The campaign highlights businesses and groups in the town that are inclusive of gender diversity.

Ted launched the initiative on Instagram earlier this year in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling that legally defines gender based on biological sex.

A total of £251 was raised at the fundraiser, which Ted said will cover the cost of producing stickers for shop windows and marketing the Safe Space initiative, while also supporting the livelihoods of those running the scheme.

  • Frome historians’ book used in BBC Radio 4 series

A book by Frome historians David Lassman and Mick Davis has been used as source material in a BBC Radio 4 true crime series.

The book, Adventures of a Victorian Conwoman, explores the life and crimes of Mrs Annie Gordon Baillie, one of the most ‘notorious’ and ‘compulsive’ swindlers of the Victorian age.

The book has been used as a source of material for the BBC Radio 4 series, Lady Swindlers, presented by historian Lucy Worsley. The series explores what the lives and crimes reveal about women in the past, and how different things are for women today.

Both David Lassman and Mick Davis feature on the cover of the book, published in 2021, with the photograph taken by Frome Times photographer Martyn Payne.

  • Have your say on how Frome Town Council keeps you informed

Residents are being asked to share their views about Frome Town Council’s communication methods in a new survey, which aims to explore new ways in which the council shares information.

Frome’s survey is a shortened version of a nationwide survey entitled ‘Who Reads What’ and will inform the council’s communications strategy to ensure that all residents can access information easily and in a format that suits their needs.

It should take around five minutes to complete and can be completed online, via a paper copy or directly to staff at forthcoming ‘pop-up’ events.

Leader of Frome Town Council, Cllr Fiona Barrows said, “Where do you find out the things you need to know about your town council? Do you head to the website, follow us on social media, or do you tend to use ‘offline’ methods such as posters or the Frome Times?

“We want to hear from you about the things that are working well and also get your suggestions about how our communication could be even better. Your insights are incredibly valuable for councillors when we’re making decisions and planning, so please take the time to share your thoughts.”

Complete the survey at https://buff.ly/SHwgGMI.
